Title: Custard on oil cap.
Post by: MickP mk3 on 20 December 2013, 18:23
Right... The other week i removed my oil cap to custard on the underside of it. I checked my oil, fine. I checked my water, fine. So i cleaned it off and checked the cap a few day later to find it appearing again, yesterday (2 weeks later), its full of it again. But still nothing in my water or oil, im not losing water and no white smoke out the back. I know it can appear with condensation, the car usually only does my work run 12 miles each way and short runs can cause air bubbles in the oil and if the oil does not get hot enough condensation will form in bubbles left behind that haven't worked there way out of the oil. Has anyone else had this?  :undecided:

Quite normal to get mayo on the cap or dipstick.

It's quite normal to get mayo on the oil cap but if it's on the dipstick then that would be a worrying sign.

Get it got on a long run and see if it clears.

I should clarify that I mean around the plug not down where it reads the level.
Your engine sucks in air when cools down the moisture in this evaporates and condenses on cold spots or where it's being sucked in.
A good clean and a long run clears most of it, I just leave it and do a change in the spring as it's mostly down to short runs on cold wet days.
So long as your not running hot or losing water into the oil etc don't worry about it

Thanks guys. Didn't think it would be anything major but wanted some reassurance :-)

If your cleaning it and it is coming back then you have a problem, 12miles is a long enough for it to get warm.
