Title: Gearbox oil seal leak help
Post by: WeekendMechanic on 20 December 2013, 13:33
So my gearbox is leaking from the oil seal from right side, is it a just matter of taking out the drive shaft, unbolting the flanged shaft, tapping it out, and replacing the oil seal?

my driveshafts have being on and off a few times and last time I did the seals (whilst the shafts were off), just ensure you use some nutlock on the bolts and it should be fine to reuse the old bolts (i put all new bolts on mine as it snapped a couple)

I would drop the oil. Then again it's perfect time to do a change as mine was well past its best

I personally thought the were bit of a pig to do with the gearbox in, I personally would remove the box and fit them that way

from memory, I don't think the green sleeves can be changed without stripping the trans but I cant remember. I straightened mine, well made it round again with a ball hammer, works fine. apart from it being very fiddly and annoying, I cant really give any pointers. just drop the gearbox oil obviously and make sure you have patience is about all I can suggest, took me about 2 hours to get the little clip back on the offside cup and never again am I doing that haha. good luck

yeah them clips are near impossible. I made a tool to pull flange in against the spring to help get the clip back on. 6 inch long by 1 inch diameter pipe. drill 10mm hole through the middle of it. then get some m10 threaded rod and a nut. works a treat. sometimes the flange can be tight in coming off so a couple of careful taps with a hammer should free it. as for the green sleeve they can just be levered out but you would probably be best straightening it best you can and fitting new seal with a dose of sealant on the outer edge.
