Title: Just brought a MK 2 help with hints and tips
Post by: Katie8959 on 19 December 2013, 21:39
Hey guys, you lot helped me find a beautiful mk 2 golf 1.3. It's my first car so couldn't get GTI :( I'm after abit of help...
The work my hubby's looking to do is:
A new accelerator cable
A good service and tidy
A new grille
Big bumper conversion
New wheels
Coilovers
Front GTI seats
Poly bushes all round

Anyone got any hints and tips on where is best to get parts from,
And any other mods to just make a more modern car?

Looking to bring my 22 year old granny mobile into the mondern day :)

Thanks folks

this might sound nuts but sometimes your better buying a rotbox gti and taking the bits you need and sell the rest

You won't make a 1.3 feel modern.  You are heading in the right direction with regards to tidying it up.  Get onto Club GTi - the wealth or knowledge like this site is huge.  As for places to get parts from try the dealers, ebay, VW Heritage, GSF and Euro Car Parts.

that's the best way... a classic car with modern technology is the best... my mini is 30 years old runs mega jolt and runs an ignition controlled launch control.. its modern enough for the track :D

Hasn't the 1.3 got a manual choke for the carb? That doesn't feel very modern. Are there ways around that to look into? I would look to buy a dirt cheap gti and take items such as electric windows, central locking etc. you could also get the bumpers off of it and gti suspension is lower. Plus bigger brakes could be used. At this rate though it would make more sense to buy a gti and put the 1.3 engine into that. All the perks of the gti with the smaller engine.

But the shell and chassis number would be for a GTI. Putting a different engine in, albeit a smaller one, would make it modified, therefore making it more difficult to insure.

If your hot on telling your insurance everything you modify it's the choice of a smaller engine with greater safety features or modifying nearly everything about the car to bring it up to gti spec. If it was me and I had I took it up to spec the only thing I would declare would be the big bumpers, everything else is easier to claim ignorance. Insurance companies are a con and want to charge you every time you change the radio station.

Wasn't much difference in insurance between a 1.3 and a Gti for me... At 19 and first car.

Tidying it up and putting big bumpers will make it look more modern. Inside it's always going to feel 20 years old... Because it is. It also won't ever drive like a modern car, and that's the beauty. So if you are looking for modern day knobs 'n' whistles then I would do as the others say and pinch them all of a Gti.

I guess you aren't  declaring the coil overs, as that will push insurance up into the Gti realms anyway... I would imagine...

Hi Katie,

Welcome to the club. A mk2 1.3 was my second golf, I upgraded from a mk1 1.0! They are great little runabouts, handle nicely and if it's your first car it's remarkably practical.

With regards to making it an easier car to drive - depending on where you live, I would advise against coilovers. I bought my GTi with coilovers from someone who lives in the country outside Bath. However in London it's horrid. So think about how many speed bumps are near you. With mine lowered 48m it can scrap the front (big) spoiler as you come off.
You might want to look at fitting a weighted mk3 shift rod. - I know that helped the gear feel on my GTi other people will let me know if this is a good idea on a 1.3.

Mk3 wiper relay is a nice mod so you can change the intermittent timings on your wipers. - quick easy and cheap too.
X4MGS - a regular on here, has a good ebay shop for genuine VW bits. I try to avoid GSF and eurocarparts as they kit is quite ropey a lot of the time. VWheritage are worth a go for a fair few things.
The last tip I can think of is, if you ever get really stuck and need advice, ask; if Rubjonny helps you - listen to him - he is always on the money!

Not on this site he's not.  Feel free to buy from him on ebay - if you have deep pockets.

I got a gti at 18 and then insurance was that much over my old 1L polo.

As he been banned from here as well?

I see he's still asking £50 for a 20 year old 16V front badge.

The 1.3 has an automatic choke, if it's still running the pierberg, or mine did anyway.

If your really into big bumper, go for it, personally, I went from big to small on my (originally) 1.3, small bumpers look great  :afro:

Leather interiors can be picked up for a couple of hundred quid from mk3s and be modified to fit.

More importantly than all that, where are the pictures?

Back on topic, if you've got the space, I think that the idea of buying a rotten GTI and swapping the trim over will make quite a difference. A nice radio with bluetooth, ipod etc and a decent set of speakers will give it a more up to date feel inside.

As others have said, it will always drive like a 25 year old car, but that's all part of the charm.

The early ones (up to about 1990) didnt have a centre console, so no, no cigarette lighter!

After a service, the very first thing you should do with an old car is get it set up properly on a rolling road. Try to build up a relationship with your local tuner. These guys will be able to get your car running exactly as it did when it left the factory, as well as identifying the weak spots. Doing this will ensure reliability AND give you the best MPG.

Everything else is of secondary importance, in my experience.

My opinion,
Keep the small bumpers,
Fit coilovers
Smart wheel choice
Keep the interior retro
Hide a new CD player in the glove box if need be!
And welcome to vw ownership.
