Can you clean a catalytic converter.
I do not have one on my car currently i am about to put on one replacing the poorly made dacat pipe
Can you cleans these and what with also will it make a difference to my MPG re fitting the cat.
And will i lose any power removing decat pipe i will be replacing the decat pipe whatever i just want to know if it will run differently and it because of the cat and nothing else doing a lot of work to it this week this being the main thing.
Does any one know how loud my car would be with the middle box removed i have a after market system on there and it doesn't evan make a noise at the moment like a standard exhaust just want a little noise with re fitting the cat im hoping for a small noise increase really.

Wow £108.00 for a garage to do it near me defiantly getting that done this month thank you
-
New cat is only £50 and a doddle to fit
-
New aftermarket cats are sh!te and will only last a year.
Get a good 2nd hand one

it depends on the brand, I sold Klarius one's and they came with a 2 year warranty and we never had a return, yet our cheaper one's did have about a 15% warranty rate (and they were a 1 yr warranty).

+1 For that, helped bring the emissions right down on my VR
-
Ive got a solid one on mine if you fancy whipping it off when you're down mate?
-
I have a good one from my old car i just thought that this terraclean would help the engine overall really.
I have had mixed reviews really so i thinks it just trial and error plus it cleans injectors so i dint think £108.00 is a bad price really i re fitting cat tonight can see through it as it very clean just the carbon build up on engine i was looking to lose.
The reason i asked if i could clean my cat is just to get the most out of it but after really looking at it its looks nearly new inside so just going to fit tonight and see how i go.
Thank you for all your reply's

As for how loud your exhaust would be when I first picked up my GTi it had a standard manifold and a powerflow cat back with a middle silencer with back box.
I changed the manifold for a 4 - 2 - 1 kept the standard cat have a straight through middle system to the back box and it LOUD. Maybe too loud bit annoying! Be careful what you go for :)
-
mine has no cat and a full stainless system and it's not too loud (my system is Magnex with middle box)
if you want loud many exhaust makers do one without the middle box
(I can do a remus system with or without box)
-
im modifying an old middle box so if it is to loud i can just change back to standard without any problems.
Mine just makes no noise.
When you changed your manifold how big of a job is it it look very long and painful with the rear sub frame being well in the way.
i Have the use of ramps at work but never really bothered to do anything yet.
-
All done middle box removed cat replaced i modified the shape of the pipe where the middle box was so its a lot smother exit instead of the left bend right bend business. Its now from the cat straight pipe right bend left bend into back box amazingly sound a lot deeper but not to laud and drives so much better and that's with the cat back on the car.
Idle has got a lot better with no blowing from the exhaust never thought it would make that much of a difference i have lost my flat spot and now legal to drive on the road thank god.
-
Sounds awesome! The ABF's do have quite a deep note with a aftermarket system  Did you change the manifold in the end?
I was gonna say I did mine before learning that it's not really necessary on the ABF's doesn't make much difference helping the engine breath wise!
-
no i just tac welded that heat shield back on down pipe was doing my nut in vibrating.
I keep looking for a manifold to come up at a decent price but ive been told abf manifolds good for 200bhp so no rush to change really.

are you still planning on getting this done?
theres a place about a minute drive away from me doing this. would be interesting to see if it worth doing on mine if you have good/worthwhile results

I wouldn't waste my money. just take car out for a damn good thrash to clear it out. works wonders. there is no miracle cure to decoking an engine. head needs to be stripped down to do it right.
-
Just when reading about results people have got. Doesnt seem alot for the outcome and it cleans injectors thats always worth doing on high mileage engine.
-
Im still in two minds about the whole Terraclean service. Part of me wants to give it go and the other is saying its just another bullsh!t marketing scam...then there's the whole debate in whether it'll do more harm than good on an old high mileage coked up engine?
-
I'm tempted also
-
Had a good look into it before I went ahead with the Terraclean, didn't find a great deal of bad reviews, nothing major at least.
As I said previously, had it done on the VR at the end of the summer with no complaints.

did you get better mpg?? that the main reason why im interested.

same here, thats why im curious about shizzle doing it too lol. if there two people with mk3s saying its good, and one of them being a abf, i might give it a go
-
Loads of positive feedback on google regarding people using it on old cars etc
-
Yeah next year I will be getting it done i want to drive it for a while so I will know if there is a big difference in how the car drives after the clean.
-

I did, but nothing major, around 1-2 mpg per tank, but I was happy with that as the engine is regularly serviced and in good health. The biggest benefits seem to be for the diesel engines regarding mpg. It did however bring all the emissions right down, as one of them (think it was hydrocarbons) was on the upper limit.
-
So really worse case you get great emissions and with mots getting more and more strict I will definitely get this done before my next mot in Jan.
-
The greater claimed benefits for the diesel engine is certainly something that catches my attention.
-
Sorry to divert this thread i have a straight through system with just a back box but my car dosent pop and bang like other cars is the 16v that efficent it dosent chuck out much unburnt fuel
-
I had that same problem thought it was strange With system I had previously the closest I have gotten to a pop is a burble when changing down only since I fitted the chip though.
-
I doubt it works....probably just as good as running paint thinner to pass emissions....
-
I think it's one of those things you have to try to believe tbh.

Indeed, its great reading the regular 'load of bollox, doesn't work' response's
