Title: Lessons needed
Post by: missymckay on 15 December 2013, 15:57
Hi, just wondering if there is any one in the Essex/London area who would be interested in teaching me a bit more about my car ie what does what under the bonnet, fuses etc. Obviously I know where the oil etc goes lol. I have just got a mk5 Gti and although I know a bit about cars it is the first VW that I have had.

Thanks :)

This Guide refers to the North American version but it's similar to the European car.

Where about in Essex are you based? I'm an Essex boy (although I refrain from talking, dressing and acting like one).

Thanks Poached for the guide :)

Mike, I'm about 5 miles from Lakeside shopping centre. Like yourself I don't go for the Essex look so no fake tan or extensions for me lmao ;)

Not interested then...

Might be worth trying to arrange some sort of mini GolfGTI.co.uk Essex branch?

Yeah thanks for that. Were there any other recalls on the mk5?

On a different note, my rear wiper is not working properly. It works when I use the rear washer but not when I just want to clear it! Any ideas?

People from Essex?!?! That's rarity on here, I'd be able to tell you nothing about under the bonnet apart from there's an engine in there but I would most defiantly be up for a meet

Yeah good old Essex lol. Whereabouts in Essex are you? :)

Thought I was gonna get asked asl then haha!

I'm in Upminster so not far from lakeside at all !

I'd say a lakeside meet would be good but not sure because of the Christmas shopping, I don't own a mk5 but if we could get loads fo different people to come that'd be cool! I know someone with another mk3 that'd come so that is already four of us

asl, I haven't heard that expression for a while lol.

Lakeside would be ok but it's a bit of nightmare there at the moment due to Christmas. I only have one mate who is into cars but he doesn't have a VW. He's got a Ford Capri 2.8i but he's up for a laugh.

Can't think of anywhere else apart from Festival in Basildon lol

Keep me posted on if you guys do an Essex meet, failing somewhere like Lakeside, what about finding a pub with a reasonable sized car park (or a pub with a public car park near by) so we got somewhere to grab a drink, food and chat, plus hide if the weather turns bad?

Other things to check for are the diverter valve (bit involved) and the PCV valve (really simple). Check out this guide for full details and how-to;

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=44709.0

Also, a very serious one to check is the high pressure fuel pump cam follower. If this goes, well... it's expensive, lets just say that. Guide for that job is here;

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,8339.0.html

All surprisingly straight forward jobs, even I've managed to do them! (Check out my project thread, link in my signature) (Yes, shameless self advertisement!)

Hey Mike will have a look at those links later on.

Can't think of any pubs with large car parks near me have you any ideas?

Back in the day Southend would've been ideal but sadly no more lol.

Quick question, my boot is leaking after all the rain yesterday, do you think it's a leaky seal?

Cheers

Post by: th3_f15t on 18 December 2013, 22:01
Leaky seal is most likely, have a good check around, I'm sure it'll be obvious where it's from. Think the new rubber seal is pretty cheap, just a bit time consuming to fit.

Ah, a fellow Saturday night Southend veteran! Those where the days, up and down the sea front, hundreds of cars every weekend. Think the rise in petrol prices killed that off pretty quickly...

Southend used to be great lol, I used to go down there with the girls in the XR2 lol.

I had a look at those guides you sent, far too confusing for me ;)

I used to cruise up and down in a white Fiesta, then later in a Mk3 Fiesta SI with RS side skirts and arches! Good old XR2 and RS Fiestas, was the sound track to my early driving days.

Trust me, I thought that about those guides at first, but if you get out there and just take your time, you'll come to realise that this whole impression that modern engines are harder to work on isn't true. Yes, there's more bits attached, but a few bolts later and it's all off. Best way to learn is to get out there, take it apart, put it back together. If it runs, you know what you're doing, if it doesn't, re-try until it runs.

Oh god I can't start taking things apart I might never get it back together lmao ;)

good old Southend, it was great :)

Start small and work you way up. Very first job to learn is an oil, filters and spark plug change, then from there work your way around the car. No-one was born knowing how to take a car apart (or put one together), we all had to start with a set of tools and a puzzled look on our faces.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Gave the car a good run from Essex to Devon on Christmas Eve, no issues at all even though I had to drive through a flood (small one) and got stuck in traffic for about 2 hours oh and it's epic round country lanes lol :)

I've driven mine round Dartmoor, but not since its been tuned. Once the new brakes and suspension go on, it'll be taken back there at some point.

Didn't think of taking it to Dartmoor, something to do next time i'm there lol although when I usually go to Dartmoor I do it old school style with one horse power ;) not as fast but still fun.

I've trekked around Dartmoor and it is fun, but the roads are just as good. Brecon Beacons in Wales is good too, apparently.

I might have to do a bit of both (driving and horse riding) when i'm down that way next lol. There's a good place that does pub rides, nothing like tying your horse outside while you have a beer ;)

That could be a good way to spend a long weekend down there.

How are you getting on with your new Golf? Still in the honeymoon period?

Yeah it's running ok, sad to say I love my car lol. Taking it into VW tomorrow for a check over, I think it's ok but just like to be sure :)

Best thing to do. If you need any parts, let me know as I know a good eBay shop that sells genuine parts, it's where I bought my R32 bumper.

Thanks for that :) The car was ok apart from the usual reports on brake/tyre wear etc. The rear wiper and water issue is covered under the warranty I have so will get that done under that. The only thing I do need is a new battery, vw quoted a stupid price so will have a look around for one. Apart from that the car is in pretty good nick lol.

Can't remember what forum I saw it on, but there's a lot better choice of battery over the original on, do a forum search or Google it. Did you find out if your Golf is due recall work for the coil packs?
Title: Re: Lessons needed
Post by: missymckay on 03 January 2014, 17:30
yeah it has had the coil pack done, vw confirmed that it was done in 2011 so one less thing to worry about lol.

Got the new battery today and it's booked in for Friday to have the wiper motor replaced (under warranty) so it's all good lol. Have been thinking of getting the rear windows tinted, do you know anywhere locally? I found a place in Kent that looks ok
Title: Re: Lessons needed
Post by: th3_f15t on 04 January 2014, 21:42
I don't know anywhere, but your rears should be 30% tinted already, if not more. Just make sure they don't exceed the maximum allowed by the law. Use local knowledge, see where other people got theirs and look at the finish.

Post by: missymckay on 06 January 2014, 19:28
I did have a read up on the regs about tinting so was just thinking of having the rear windows done. They have a blue tint to them at present but would like them a bit darker. My mates think I am having an early mid life crisis with all this car talk lmao ;)
