Hi all, don't know if some of you remember that some time ago I posed a question as to why all of a sudden, my DAB stations had stopped broadcasting DAB Logos and track information, and some stations had even disappeared ?.
When I collected the car on the 14th September, I had a number of local stations (north west) that were broadcasting these logos which looked very smart on the large Discover Nav pro screen. I did notice that a number of them carried a text warning that appeared once in a while on screen saying that their station would change after September 24th. Well since then, apart from BBC World Service, I have absolutely no stations at all that broadcast these logos any more.
Well, I've just read this and wondered if that's something to do with it.
"Why have so many local stations disappeared from DAB? Well, it’s to do with the closure of the North-West regional DAB multiplex. When you switch your shiny new DAB radio on for the first time, it scans for all available stations, which you can then pick and choose from for your listening delight. Unlike FM, stations are bundled together in groups and broadcast together, digitally. One of these bundles was the fantastic North-West regional – a group of stations you couldn’t easily get anywhere else. It’s this bundle of stations which is effectively being broken up, with pop music stations getting a reprieve and other “niche” stations missing out on being broadcast on local multiplexes due to lack of space.
Up until 24th September, the North-West regional multiplex carried several of these digital-only stations, such as LBC and Choice FM. Whilst this was great for listeners, who got a chance to listen to something different and unique, the stations’ owners reviewed the listening figures and compared them with their bigger brands (Capital, Real Radio and Smooth Radio) and decided that it no longer made commercial sense to keep paying for carriage on DAB digital radio, since LBC and Choice were fairly London-centric stations that could not attract the level of advertising in the North-West enjoyed by their sister stations, which also have an FM frequency to bolster listening figures and advertising. There was also limited space on local multiplexes for Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire, which meant that not all stations could be moved from the North-West regional without cramming them onto local DAB in mono."
I thought DAB was supposed to be the next great thing and that FM was supposed to be switched off fairly soon. Is this another lie fed to us by the government ?

Commercial decision by the station owners as that article states. Not sure what that has to do with DAB logos or blaming the government
-
Don't start me on DAB! It is mess world-wide!
Last car I had came with DAB and then in 2012 over here the switched it all off and went to DAB+. This gives better sound quality for lower bandwidth and no 'bubbling' when a station is weak - it just goes. But to make all DAB radios obsolete overnight was bonkers and cruel!!
I can't understand why all new radios are not now DAB+ as it costs the same and is backwards compatible. This would mean you could use your DAB+ radio abroad too. Land Rover even supply DAB sets in countries with DAB+ only! There isa petition website to try and change this: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/dab-radio-for-land-rovers.html (http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/dab-radio-for-land-rovers.html)
You'll pick up a bit on DAB in Germany, but not much else on the Continent.

Sorry, maybe I worded incorrectly, I don't blame the government for the decisions of local radio station owners, the point I was making, is that we were told that FM would be totally switched off by 2014/2015, and therefore if you wanted to keep listening to radio after that, you either needed a DAB receiver or internet radio in the car. Now it seems DAB stations owners are actually migrating back to FM ?
-
not sure if this helps or not but I can't get any dab stations logo to appear apart from world service either. my rns510 dab displayed all the station logos no problem yet this newer supposedly better nav pro can't. uploading the logos is an option but why should you have to. my software is 0192 so not sure if this makes any difference.

i thought you had to download them and stick them on a SD card?
-
I loaded all my DAB logo's via a SD card.
Its very easy and only a 5 minute job.
-
2014, do me a favour, tell me where you got them all from, I need to do this myself I have the SD card coming this weekend and i dont want to be downloading each individual one, would be nice if they all came in one nice bundle

Again maybe I haven't been clear.
There are a number "screens" available on the DAB channels, they being:
■ Preset list - Display the preset list containing only stored DAB stations
■ Station info. - Displays DAB station information, accompanying text (radio text) and images1) (e.g., artist name or programme and image type where these are broadcast)
■ Radio text - Displays one radio text
■ Slide show - Displays one image; the image will switch to full-screen view until you switch the screen back on by moving your hand towards it.
For the pre-set list, you can most certainly download station logos for the 6 pre-set place holders (as you would do for the FM stations). However, when set to station info or Slide show modes, the DAB stations should automatically supply either larger more detailed station logos, and well as current album playing art work etc. When they don't broadcast these (as none of them in my area are currently doing), then the small .jpg or .png logo you used for the Pre-Set station screen, is also used on the Station Info and Slide Show screens, but isn't up-scaled, so just appears as a tiny logo in the middle of a giant artwork place holder.
Mcmaddy and I have tried to get these screens to display much larger icons (by uploading larger resolution images in the first place), but they all downsize to the same size as the icons for the Pre-Set list. It would seem only artwork being received over the DAB network itself as part of the data stream can make use of the full size graphics. This is how it was displayed in the first few weeks of getting the car and looked really cool, however since the 24th, no stations in my catchment area are displaying any graphics what so ever, and it just seems a waste of the larger Nav Pro screen real estate.

Well thats poo!
I will test mine in the Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire area's and report back.
-
I thought only DAB+ stations transmitted images, such as those on ze continent and world service of course.
I have never seen the logo for any UK based DAB station displayed.
-
I don't have the Pro, but I don't get any logos coming up 'on their own' ie. from the broadcaster. I had to load them onto an SD as mention above.
As an aside, I find it highly annoying when the DAB drops out of signal, happens to me all the time regardless of what station I'm listening to. On the flip side, the sound quality is good!
-
I didn't need to load any logos onto my old rns510 dab as they all just appeared on the screen. nav pro and RNS are made by different manufacturers but your think vw would ask for at least the same radio specifications for a newer model.
-
I agree with Matchboy - never had DAB before, but did not expect it to drop out so much!
-
So far my DAB has rocked... ok i really only listen to 1 or two station, but not dropped out yet! (Apart from once going under a bridge!)

Mine has been good too, no dropouts yet.
I will be starting my run to the office next week so fingers crossed Capital FM works all the way from home to work and back.
-
Mine works fine too, although I mainly listen to National stations rather than regional ones.
-
6 Music or Radio 2. Only really drops out occasionally depending on where you are, I think they handle it well though it just fades out rather than that annoying "squelching" you get with DAB interference
-
it would seen only the bbc world service station broadcasts in a higher rate than other stations and that's why we get the large logo on screen. all the other stations are broadcasting in a really low rate.

Hmm im having the same problem that I did at work. I the computer is telling me that the files are corrupt and wont extract them, they seem to download ok but i could be missing something here
-
re download them. server errors caused my nav update to not want to extract so I downloaded it again and it worked fine.
-
I've completely and utterly given up trying to get the logo's to upload and work on the head unit
Just resigned to looking at empty grey boxes for each channel
-
your not really missing much except a tiny small station logo.

How far have you got? Have you managed to download the zipped folder to your desktop, unzipped the folder and been able to view the contents?
