Title: DSG paddles - standard or not ?
Post by: hifipatrik on 24 August 2005, 17:29
Hi, I have placed an order for a GTI with DSG gearbox almost 2 months ago.  I assumed that gearshifters on the steeringwheel was standard but got worried after a while that the case wasn't so.....
I live in Ireland and i have noticed that the standard equipment differs from country to country. Anyway, I contacted my dealer who of course didn't have a clue. After checking with the factory they came back and said that ALL DSG cars have the gearshifters as standard.
Still I am not completely convinced and I generally have a very low trust in what car dealers are promising.....After reading numerous forums it seems to be very mixed answers on this topic, some says you have to order the multifunctional wheel and some says its standard....

Is there anyone who know what the case is for Ireland ? Anyone out there having a DSG with paddles but not the multifunctional steering wheel ??

Cheers / Patrik

Hi Patrik,

I'm in Ireland as well. I can assure you that the DSG does not come with with paddle shift as standard and if you want it you will have to buy the multi function AND cruise control at a cost of about 1000 euros. I have both and it is well worth the money.

A relation of mine has DSG but no paddles, thus proving the point I think.

What dealer are you buying from?

Of course if your dealer has told you you are getting the paddles as standard at no extra cost and that is what you actually get, say nothing!! If they dont come with the car, you would have grounds for complaint, as he has informed you they are coming with the car.

Make sure also that he hasnt just include the price for the paddles in your order, just cross check your order with the VW Ireland web site.

Thanks for the reply

Its pretty amazing that cardealers doesn't seem to have a clue what is included as standard and what all the different options are.....
My car is on order with Ballsbridge Motors and as I said they are saying that they have spoken to the factory and that ALL DSG's are coming with the paddles...
It sounds a bit strange if you need to order cruisecontrol as well, which I by the way never use......that was the first time I have heard that, i sincerely doubt it though....I am almost 100% that you get gearshifters with the multifunctional wheel "only" and for about 670 Euros

I need to have a discussion with these jokers again..

Hi again,Patric.

I would be really interested in  knowing if you get your DSG with multi function wheel and paddles but WITHOUT Cruise.

I was told specifically I had to order Cruise with the wheel despite the fact the VW site shows them as separate options.

That being said, I think cruise is actually a good option to have as it will save you points on your licence, you will know what I mean when you get the car.

Just go through the prices they have charged you on the order and compare with the VW site to ensure they tally up.

Good luck

I will update when I get the car, end of September is the latest update.
They yet again confirmed to me yesterday that they had been speaking with VW factory that confirms that ALL Irish DSG comes with paddles.....so it will be very interesting to see what I get. The guy from Ballsbridge Motors that I spoke to yesterday was very helpful, have to give them credit for that.

As for the cruisecontrol, I just never use it and especially in ireland there is very few roads where you can have it activated for more than a few minutes. I have had it in other cars and I only used it on 2 lane motorways where you can keep the speed consistently (not Ireland).
Since I hold a Swedish driving license I don't get points if caught speeding, so no worries there !!

I hope you get it, Patrik, for sure, just make sure the price he has quoted you for DSG isn't over what is quoted on the VW Ireland web site.

Good luck

After some delays I finally picked up my black GTI with DSG gearbox yesterday and YES, it has paddles as standard. Just as they promissed me.
From now on it is, according to the dealer, standard on all DSG cars sold in ireland.   So you do not have to get the multifunction wheel or Cruisecontrol in order to get the paddles.
Now comes the next problem, find out the best way to get a decent subwoofer in there that is also will be easy to remove when needed......

Have to hit the road now to get the miles up !!

Thats good to know although I have to say I've grown used to the multifunctionwheel and cruise now so not feeling too bad although I cant see  why they couldnt get all this sorted before the car was launched.

Good luck with the car, looks great in black I have to say but not as nice as red, but I would say that wouldnt I!!

Hello,

I am Ireland too and ordering a GTI next week for delivery in Jan - me too going for DSG 5 door (new baby in April ). But I have had all similar Q's for the stealer, they have been very good but it is very difficult getting answers from VW! Stealer lent me a manual for 36 hours.... fantastic! shame my wife will be driving it when we get it

Anyway, the DSG we also tested some weeks back did not have paddles and all newer builds do it seems. I am ordering multifunction purely cause I want radio controls etc on wheel. On the UK vw.web site it has differing configurations for multifunction wheel - I asked stealer if I got CC could I have the controls for CC on wheel and drop phone buttons cause I am not getting VW phone prep in GTI and are getting Nokia kit fitted instead.

He came back and whilst he was able to get some things for me (Under seat storage drawers and auto central locking on take off) said that CC on wheel was not option on Irish build - multifunction will have phone controls and CC will be on standard indicator/washer control levers. Can either of you tell me different based on what ye have? I know paddles are standard but want to know if I order CC with multifunction will CC be on wheel or levers behind?

Also - did ye go for 18" or 17" - think we are getting 18" and if ride is too hard for baby etc we wil pick up cheap 17" from someone switching to 18"

Do ye know if I order Xenon's will the light washer be standard or do I have to get winter pack??

Hope ye are all enjoying the new GTI.... I drive a Volvo S60 Auto 2.0T and the GTI just blows it away! DSG/Auto with better performance and efficiency than manual appeals to me

Thanks

Hi Paddy,

I can only speak of my own experience but I have DSG with paddles and cruise. The CC is on the left hand indicator stalk, no other option available on that as far as I know. It is actually in quite a convenient place and very easy to use, you can enable and disable CC with a small sliding switch on the top of the stalk and set/reset on the side of the stalk. CC will save you points on your licence if used correctly!!

The steering wheel has volume control, station/ track select as well as the phone buttons, cant speak with much knowledge on this as I dont use/need them, but they can tie in with one of the Nokia models, I'm sure it is mentioned in the manual.

If I was you I would get the wheels right before ordering as I wouldnt like to be looking for 17" or 18" wheels second hand OR new for the GTI, they are about 700 euros? I think new plus fitting if you have to buy seperately from the dealer. Visually I think the standard wheel s are great and aftermarket wheels just wont look right. If money is no object go for 18", unless you are going to be driving on poor roads regularly, I would say.

I think you need to order the winter pack for the washers.

I went for standard air con in mine and did without the sunroof, this saved me 1200 euros which was spent on other areas of the car, like FCARest.

There appears to have been a lot of confusion over the paddles on the earlier cars, it defies belief that they could not get it sorted before importing the vehicles, but car importers seem to lack even the most basic info on their vehicles.

Who are you buying from BTW?

Good luck with the car,

R

Hi rega3

Likely ordering from Foster Motors up in Sandyford. Called all over the country for pricing but they (Fosters) were very accomodating and let myself and my wife test drive the DSG and then also to test 18"s they give us a manual with 18"s for over a day - this to me is worth forsaking a few hundred in discount as it was great to take it out and do all the things I would not try in my nice shiny new one

What amazed me was the difference in discounts that you can get with a few phone called - ranges easily +/- €1000 - €2500 off to be got with some calls! - Hope this is not p**sing you off having already bought...?

Regards
Paddy

No, I bought for cash so got a reasonable discount at the time 1500 as far as I remember.

Supply might have improved a bit since June, hence discounts might be a bit better, not too sure about this.

Decided on a colour yet??

Rega3,

I'm in the computer business, HI-FI and home cinema is just an interest that has been with me since the age of 6....got my first "real" stereo then.
Do you know if there is a low level output on the back of the RCD 500 stereo ?  It becomes a bit more tricky if I have to get the signal for a subwoofer from a high level speaker output.....wouldn't wanna do that....
