Title: Buying a GTI. Need some Advice.
Post by: Grant-gti on 08 December 2013, 15:05
Hi everyone.

Getting myself a mk6 gti in January and I need some help. Was there a facelift of this car, if so what's the differences and year. I've seen some with Xenons and some without thinking this could be a facelift model?

I'm selling my S3 to get a golf. So should have around 15k to play with. Any advice would be brilliant.

Grant.

Xenons are an extra hence some have it some don't. On the mk 7 xenons are standard.

I think there may be some slight differences with the newer ones than the 09's but I'm unsure someone else will probably pitch in and answer that.

Later mk6's have LED rear lights, daytime running lights (fairy lights) and factory Bluetooth prep.  Not exactly sure from when, maybe 2011 but 2012 models definitely include these things.  Also leather seats (heated) became standard on later models, cloth being the standard on earlier cars.

Thanks for the help, with my budget I will be looking at an 09/10 plate. If it dosent come with LED rear lights and Xenons I will try find a set on eBay. I have seen a few aftermarket R20 lights. Still around the £600 for a full set tho lol. P.s I prefer the standard tartan seats, they look amazing.

Xenons with or without fairy lights were always an option with the exception of the ED35. LED rears came in around 2010. This is when you got fairy lights if you speced xenons.

Bluetooth and leather was added as standard during the last year of production, so you may find a late 2011 car with them. There are also some slight differences in the DIS. With later cars you can use it to select DRL's, whereas with the early ones you had to do the indicator down, flash the lights thing.

The change to LED rears was the only real facelift the car got. The later editions to spec were just making standard some factory options. Leather isn't everyones cup of tea and Bluetooth can be retro fitted quite easily.

That's for the help again, I might be lucky enough to get one within my budget , just got to keep hunting for a nice spec. I've been hearing lots about the tensioner problem. Any of you guys had issues? When I buy mine it does come with 2 years warranty.

It's a 52 plate, Nogaro Blue.

Not yet, I've started a new job a month ago. Need to be there at least 3 months before lenders will help me. So it's another 6-7 weeks until I get one.

I went to volkswagen and asked about trade in price. They said £1500 lol. Stuck it on the net and 9 people are very interested at £4300. My brother was good enough to give me his 08' Audi s3 as a daily until I get my Golf. Gives me time to sell it now, nothing worse than seeing the car you love then trying to sell your car in a matter of days, too much stress haha.

Are you sure?  On my 62 plate, there is no option in any menu in the DIS to disable/alter the DRL's.  Handbook also states that they cannot be turned off.  Not sure if the indicator stalk method works as never tried it, but definately no option via DIS menus. That said, I have no intention of turning them off!

i was going to just use the train to work, but once I got my first wages through turns out I'm getting more than I expected so thought it time to treat myself as I can finally afford a new car. I would but it's SHOCKING on fuel  and I think the mk6 in white really stands out and have amazing reviews.

Can't see the mk6 gti being much better on fuel than the s3  :undecided:

What kind of MPG are you lot getting. I do about 12 miles a day with some traffic. A little bit of stop/start stuff. The S3 has been mapped to 310hp and even driving like a granny and never going near boost it can get like 22Mpg at a push. I've read on parkers they can get upto 38?

Realistically, you'll probably get around 30mpg. 40's can be achieved but require long motorway journeys and a feather like touch on the right pedal.

Post by: Jimmgc51 on 08 December 2013, 20:58
I get about 30MPG or around 300-350 miles per full tank.

I do give it some as well

Regarding warranty you can add this to an old car, VW need to do an inspection on it them the warranty is placed back on the car. This just keeps your option open and the potential saving for going private would pay for it!

Also get 30mpg average, and normally 320 miles per tank.  That's with lots of daily town driving (stop/start heavy traffic), fair bit of rural driving and a bit of motorway.  And not driven with economy in mind.

30 mpg 300 miles per tank on average. Goes up a bit on longer journeys obviously

I was sure I'd read somewhere that you could. You can on other VAG cars of that age. On my Passat, it's in the lighting section of the vehicle set up menu.

That was the first place I looked, but nothing.  Not in any other section either.  Too much to expect consistency across the VAG range!

Roughly 310 miles per tank sounds good. My current S3 does about 380 miles per tank and that's got a capacity of 62l. So my wallet should notice that lol.

The NEDC Combined figure for this vehicle is achievable (38.3 Mpg).

Based on your figures for the 8L S3, your averaging around 27 Mpg. The extra tank capacity makes it look better than it actually is because of the 62l tank compared with the c.55l tank in the Golf.
