So, installed a mk3 shift rod 10mins ago. R, 1st and 2nd feel great. But I can't get anything else. Actually, I can get 4th at a standstil, anyone know of an obvious reason 3rd and 5th won't engage?
Cheers
Edit... Although it is the obvious reason, it doesn't fit. The rod doesn't leave enough space when engaging the forward gears. So side to is fine. And pulling back is fine. Just the position for 3rd and 5th, there isn't space for. I was under the impression it was a straight swap, do I in fact have to modify it?

No need to modify. I feel it must have been out in the first place.
You'll need to set it up with one of these.

you need to drive it 10 miles for it to recode itself . just kidding. if the gears were fine before you changed it then I would check the new rod for snagging on the gearbox somewhere. check the section it connects to nearest the engine. that piece might be bent down a bit causing the weight to catch something below it.

What's the rest of the linkage like, is the rubber ball ok?

Linkages replaced a few months ago. Which makes me think I didn't set it properly back then, resulting in this...

Do you have a short shift fitted also?
I had to cut a wedge out of mine originally when I had the short shift so that it didnt foul.

Although I didn't fit it, I do remember it being mentioned in the ad... Hmm okay, you got any pics?

Dont have any pics handy but you cut bout half an inch of the underside on the gearbox end of it.

std fitment should look like that, and not need altered

if you have a short shift kit, then there is potential for the right hand underside to foul against the lower arm, so you just trim of the underside a bit with a hacksaw!

That's awesome thanks!
From that picture it looks like I have a short shift kit fitted. So, time to get hacking! Thanks!

I wish all my mk2 problems could be fixed by taking chunks off with a hacksaw or hitting things with a big hammer.
