I've looked at a few threads already and i have seen the link to the pictorial about the seat element fix but can't see which element people have used.
I have been on to the stealers today and because its a heated Recaro leather seat it's not a straight forward fix. The part i need for the seat comes with the leather base and they want £480 for the privilage of selling me this. In a detailed conversation with the parts guy, he reckons that the cheaper cloth element, again around £190 won't do the fix either.
It's deffo the element as i've checked the power supply at the seat base and tested for a circuit in the element which showed it was broken.
Anybody got any advice?? Dion't think i can handle another winter with freezing cold seats at 5 in a morning!!
Cheers

Might work out cheaper to source replacements for example a dude I got some parts off is breaking his 5 door with has full black leathers and he's asking £380 for the lot. Might be worth looking for a deal like this then sell yours add advertise the heated element dont work
-
i would have thought all the elements be it cloth or leather would be the same! only thing i can think of being different is if they were from non recaro, they might be a different shape. but personally id say an element is an element.
quick fix, wear 2 pair trousers

Will this not do? It might be worth PMing Matt@OCD to ask him nicely if the part numbers match the leather elements:

I think the upper element is piggy backed off the lower element so if the lower stops working the upper should as well...i think?!?
Yeah, i've seen this and several others but apparently the leather Recaro is different. I was wondering if anybody had changed the element in this make/model of seat or you can fit a normal element!
-
Yeah mine are leather to
-
The leather and cloth Recaros are the same shape so I don't see how the elements can differ
-
You have 2 types of leather seats. The recaros and the non recaros. Maybe thats where the difference is? Stripping the seats apart is easy. I did my mk3 anni seats and it was dead easy
-
Id assume that the RECARO cloth or leather would be the same?
-
Apparently, the difference is that the element is stitched in to the actual leather and padding and not glued onto the seat base foam.
I'm going to try and strip it this week to have a look and see if this is the case.I may try and jump the burned out section with a piece of wire first if it can't be removed from the actual seat.
I know its not a golf seat, but you get the gist!

It may not be that bad?!? All you are doing is "joining" the burnt section with a thicker piece of wire by soldering a thicker wire in. Its still the same amps running thru the element.
-
So its just a normal copper wire?
-
Well, I've given up trying to repair them!
I took the seat base apart and yes - the element is stitched to the leather fabric and not glued to the fabric(apart from the bolster sides). Decided not to have a go at the soldering process as the element is really thin.
Anyways, i bought a mega cheap second hand set and just swapped over the drivers seat and hooray....a hot toasty bum again. Got the same money when i sold the set of seats on, so the fix didn't cost me anything in the end.
I had to replace the seat base as the bolster had gone(foam only, not leather)but i got one from the scrappy(£5) from a passenger side fabric seat, had the same part no's on the seat base.
I carefully peeled the side elements off my base and removed the excess foam from the under side and simply stuck back on to the new base and refitted the leather cover - built the seat back up and its as good as new.
