Title: Suspension ?
Post by: laydon on 24 August 2005, 11:30
My Mk2 8v is on standard suspension which is now 15 years old. I quite like the ride there is a little more body roll than I would like but it's not an issue. I don't want to mess around with adjustable settings or have it too low just fit and forget. Can anyone suggest an upgrade? I don't mind splashing out so budget is not an issue. Is it true that the 16v suspension is slightly lower? anyone have experience of driving both, would a 16v setup be the best option.
I could replace with standard vag items but surely suspension has come a long way in 15 years. :undecided:

if you want a comfy ride then dont buy coiovers. Supersport Goldlines are back breakers trust me

If you want a good ride, not too hard and not too low I'd suggest the boge turbo shocks and lowering kit you get from GSF. I know its not a very flash kit but it sounds like its just what you want, I had it on my last car and it was a good combination of ride and comfort. You probably want the -35mm kit as thats -35 from standard height, gtis are already lowered i think its either 15 or 20 from standard height so the resulting drop will lower your car by either 15 or 20 mm.

Mk2_Ozz is on the right track with the Boge Shocks, but I would go for Eibach springs, they are fantastic.

Edit: I have the 40mm drop springs on my car, and I am very impressed.

choose the Mk2 then click on 'suspension'. worth shopping around for. Found mine going cheap on ebay.

Thats a good point actually, if cash isnt an issue you may as well go for eibach springs

If you're looking for a really good setup, go for the koni shocks and 20mm eibach springs. They completely compliment each other and give a very subtle look as well as a pinpointed drive, not harsh at all, unlike my avo coilovers!

On a similiar subject would Eibach springs be ok if I bought new Vag dampers as i'm after a driveable car not a track stlye set up although would like to get Eibachs Arb's, my mates 8v had them and it was such an improvement over standard ....

Laydon thats one clean looking Mk2 - will have to show my brother as he had the same colour and he loved it ....

I am looking at this too, I took a look at the awesomegti site, they have a Bilstein sportline kit for £169.  top brand great price, whats the catch ?  Makes the Koni kit look expensive at £298.

Shaft 69 - What do you mean "proper set up" i thought Eibachs were alright?   But if your saying g60 front and Neuspeed rear is a proper set up, then is that for normal use daily use or track use?

Yes that will be OK, they were designed with the origonal shocks in mind. The reason people say do the shocks with new boge or Koni is that they are an improvement over standard shocks and in the Koni's case, have adjustable damping. Your old shocks will almost certainly be passed there best, unless they have been replaced in the last few years.

Cool as im not after track set up just something thats lowered abit and not a solid ride, but dont mind spending to get it right as the rides got to fairly standard no harshness!!! So anyone with Eibach springs with Konis that can give me there verdict??

And arb's in the near future ...

Thanks Guys Dave

my mate's got Red koni's which have of car adjustment which are very good, using -40mm h&r springs. Spoke to him yesterday rates set up highly. He just fitted ibiza 20vt front arb and says has transformed handling.
