Title: Fault Reader
Post by: th3_f15t on 04 December 2013, 18:02
I know this may be better in the garage sub-section, but for a Mk5 GTI, is the following tool any good;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxiscan-MS509-Autel/dp/B001LHXTO0/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1386179639&sr=1-1&keywords=autel+maxiscan+ms509

Reading an old copy of Golf+ that ran a test on loads rated this a recommended buy, and for £30 on Amazon, seems to me to be a handy told to have in the back pocket to aid home repairs. Anyone else used one of these?

Also aware of VCDS-Lite and the such, but don't currently own a laptop or anything and it's not practical at this time to buy the software.

I had a similar one - it worked on my Mk5 golf but it was very limited and I ended up getting vcds anyway. One thing to bear in mind is that these type of tools usually only look at the engine module, so you may not be able to clear other codes i.e. airbag light, brakes etc... and you certainly won't be able to is change some advanced parameters i.e. code cruise control etc...

The other thing is that it's no way as friendly as vcds as it's designed for all OBD2 cars, so you will end up with a code rather than a text description of the fault as in vcds.

One thing you could consider is the bluetooth OBD2 dongles with a suitable apple or android OBD2 app as these have a bit more flexibility (and are cheaper).

It seems to be CAN-bus capable so that should mean it will connect OK.

OK, VCDS-Lite suitable for home servicing and basic fault finding then? May have to invest in a cheap laptop or something...
