Title: cooling fan not kicking in
Post by: nhop10 on 03 December 2013, 23:33
Hi all,

Recently bought an Audi a3 1.8 20v t (AUM) but the fan has stopped kicking in for some reason and so it starts to overheat in traffic. it also doesnt come up to temp (90 on the gauge) whilst driving along. The engine management light is on and so i have got in it booked into the garage next week and they will obviously plug it in to see whats up.

I was just wondering if anyone new any possible reasons for whats going on before i go to the garage??

not getting up to temp, proberbly thermostat or temp sender

the fan moduels sometimes break meaning they just dont kick in. or could be a wiring fault somewhere

So the garage replaced one of the temp sensors and this has fixed the fan as it now works fine when engine gets hot plus the engine management light has gone off.

However the car doesn't seem to ever come up to temp (90 degrees on the dial) unless I sit in traffic for ages and even then it doesnt always. If i drive along say at 40-50mph for a few miles then the engine temp drops to like 60 on the dial or the same as when you just start the car?? most other vw/audis i have ever had come up to temp pretty quick and stay their. if the temp rises slightly then the fan kicks in to maintain that temp. It just doesn't seem right to me so its back in the garage on saturday. Just wondering if anyone knows what could be causing this?? thanks

Yup, sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.
