this months episode of car problems is misfire. Im thinking coil packs maybe as the plugs were only just changed couple months ago... so any ideas on how a non mechanic minded gimp like me would be able to check
-
what year is the car
-
Is it misfiring under load or all the time, even when idling?
What engine code is it? AUM's can some times bring up a code showing which cyclinder has the misfire.
If its missing on idle you could try unplugging the coils 1 at a time and listen for a change.
If you have a dead coil when its unplugged the engine idle wont change at all.
-
sorry yeah its an ARZ and it sounds bad idle. but under acceleration its awfull and makes the car shake until 3000rpm
-
Try unplugging one coil at a time, When you unplug a good coil the car will run really bad or die.
when you find a bad one there will be now change. You may have more than one dead coil.
-
cool I shall nip out and check now
-
number 3 seems to be knackered.
-
does your car have an ignition amp :undecided:
-
Yeah i believe it does. Just ordered another coilpack £47 from vw
-
No the ARZ doesn't have one. You should check if your car is part of the recall with VW
-
Euro do the coils for £25 each,
Wazzer is bang on though, check with the dealer weather your car is on the recall.
Keep the old coil pack as they will only replace original coils.

have a full set only a week old from euro that we replaced with a genuine set baxxy had for sale as the eurocrapparts bits made the car run like a bag of spanners

really I didn't think an old beast like mine would be available for recall
-
If it's any consulation I'm having the same grief with my 02 plate and I've replaced the plug just in case... No change!! Did your engine managment light come on and does flash on/off when driving??

have you checked to see if your coil packs have been replaced under the recall they had
-
They do honor the recall on old cars.
Plenty of mk4 owners are still getting them done under the recall
-
No i haven't but I'll ring up my local dealer and find out if they've got it on record. Cheers :-)
-
Also will it run alright on 3 till it can be sorted, about 3 days?
-
i just called vw and they told me that the recall was done on 17/02/2011 but I got the car on 12/02/2011. I don't believe that the car was done and how lond does a coilpack last? I hope more than 2 years
-
Fixed!!! Happy days again thanks for all advice. Shall be back next month with another problem
-
Cheers every1 cars sorted with a new coil and its going to vw on Friday for a new coil pack (after replacing the new 1 for the knackered original) because it was missed on the recall.. Result!!
