Title: vw golf 1.8 turbo engine questions
Post by: harkerg on 01 December 2013, 04:04
So as the topic states just some random questions.

What upgrades can I do and how could I check what turbo is fitted it has been mapped before but somethins up its fueling wrong and the boost varies drops of when sticking foot down and sometimes holds back n backfires.

So I figure rather than just map it again and find the problem I might aswel get a front mount n some other bits n pieces before hand and just get it all set up together.

So to sum it up can anyone tell me what injectors pump and turbo id need and also if anyone has any of these for sale aswel as a front mount and piping would be greatly appreciated cheers.

How much power are you after and how deep are your pockets?

Theyr fairly deep but I dont wanna go stupid not yet anyway I would think 280 bhp or 300 would be a fairly easy to start.

You're better off posting in the mk4 section, the garage is always pretty dead.

prob best getting it checked to see if any fault codes are present an stick a picture up of the engine bay, and if you have owned a few and your mate has a tuned 1 can he not tell you what mods you already have

depends what turbo and other mods you have but if you start with the agu with a k03 turbo an just a map and exhaust you might not see 200bhp

I'm not on my phone now so I'll give a more detailed reply.

Before even thinking about more power you need to make sure yours is running well, you need to establish which turbo you have and what existing mods you have.

Engine code can be found stamped on the block or on the sticker which can be found on the boot floor:

AGU/ARZ - KO3 which is good for 190-195bhp tops

AUM/AUQ - KO3s which is good for 230-240bhp with correct supporting mods.

1 -1.5 BAR is definitely higher than standard boost pressure so it's almost certainly been mapped before. If you can post any mods that you know of and a picture of your engine bay I'm sure we can tell you more.

As far as your rough running you need to scan with VAGCOM for any fault codes as a starting point.

The boost should be progressive, i.e. it doesn't be boosting to 1.5 bar all the time in every gear. Does the power delivery feel smooth or is it hesitant?
