Well after having my car a few months and starting to get on top of the problems and plan out what I'm going to do with it, some dippy twit rear ends it's when my girlfriend is on her way back from a friends. Bumper, right arch by the filler cap and rear light are screwed, and the boot has a nice scratch. Insurers are talking about a f**king right off after I drove 4 hours to get this bloody car!! Do you think they're going to right it off??
Thanks
I'm angry.....
-
yip chances are they will write it off due to being a few quid to repair  might be worth buyin back an selling in bits
-
unfortunately yes they will mate. You need to see if there is any damage under the bumper as there is a dirty great reinforcement bar under it that will bend the panel before it bends itself
If it's ok you could always buy it back from the insurers if you know someone who will repair the arch but will need to be a very good repair. Bumper and light are easy bolt on fixes as is the paint on the tailgate.

yeah but with your whiplash claim you can buy a better one lol no seriously I know how it feels to have a car you like very much be taken from you because some nugget can't drive for sh!t,if they do write it off buy it back for peanuts and break it
-
As above, will definitely be a write off., had it not been for the rear arch it'd be an easy repair.
-
plenty more 1.8ts out there
-
Truely gutted for you mate
-
If someone did it to mine I'd seriously cry like a baby and then cry some more.
Gutted for you mate I really am.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
-
Cheers for the sympathy fellas. I've accepted that the car is doomed but still ain't happy about it. I'm going to look for another auq and will hopefully get another that isn't a POS
In the words of schwarzenneger, I'll be... Well you know the rest ;)
Thanks
-
Gutted for you mate. Had that happen to my gti few years back
If it will only cost 200-300 to repair then buy it back thats i did my gti and kept it 3 years on

Agreed, rear quarter is very expensive to sort to a high standard.

Alright fellas. I've seen a 2001 180 in thinking about buying. Were there any revisions on the later ones or am I good buying a 2001 instead of a 2003 like the one I've got now?
Thanks

they never made the 180bhp version in 2001 so the ad must be wrong or the car has been mapped
-
I thought that. Hrm. That's a bit iffy. The search continues
Thanks

has your car been written off then

Not yet but it's a mess and my girlfriend said it doesn't drive properly so there's probably some suspension or chassis damage I guess. I'm pretty confident it's done for :-( I'm not one to hang about, I'll just get another and wait for some money to come my way. Life goes on

as long as everyone is ok the car can be replaced any pictures of the damage
-
My girlfriend said she really aches today so will probably get some compo. Only got this crappy pic on my phone but you get the jist of the damage. You can see the bulge in the arch

ask the insurance company how much they want for it if they write it off
-
I was thinking about that but a mechanic friend of mine said because the c pillar needs replacing it ain't worth it. Also if it don't drive right there's probably some quite bad chassis or suspension damage. It's a bit much for me to take on I reckon.

might be worth it for the bits  always worth asking
-
Yeah you're right, I'll ask. I want to get a new one before they take this one so I can swap the MAF too. Bought a new one not long ago

  a would just break the full car if they are giving you it cheap enough done it loads of times
-
I think breaking a car is a bit more than I could handle really tbh

pm me a price if they do write it off
-
Haha no problem.
-
is it another mk4 you are after
-
Yeah another 180. Already got some brembos so need the same car plus the 25% power increase I'm allowed is more on a 180 than a 150 obviously :)
-

your policy will end when they write the golf off so you could use another company that allows more
-
60000000000% write off I'm afraid matey. That arch confirms it, the boot floor will most likely be pushed in to manage that!
-
Fair enough. I've accepted that now. My insurance will end even though I'm not claiming on mine?
-
Will it?? even though I'm not claiming on mine?
near 100% certain it will

Not always, when I wrote my car off, they asked me if I was buying another vehicle and wanted to transfer it to the new vehicle, cos it was my fault they charged me a small fortune to insure the new car tho.
It may be different if you pay monthly to paying in full
-
Hrm. I hope I get a decent amount of money back then. Only had it three months and it cost 700 quid
-
Ah, I'd rather transfer it to another car anyway. Make life easier

the car only cost you 700quid or you spent that on it since buying it

I still had the same renewal date, my insurance started in November I crashed in may and it still was for renewal in November, I just paid the extra for changing car and now having a crash.

Found a blue 180 for 2200 with 60k on the clock. Might have to buy that I think. Are we saying my car is definitely getting written off and I should buy another?
Thanks

we can guess all day long but your best speaking to your insurance company but looking at the damage they probably will due to repair costs
-
Yeah I'll give them a bell and see what they think. As long as everything goes smoothly this may not be so bad. Low miles on the new one I might get plus my current one did have a few issues. Clearly I'm a glass half full kinda guy :-) let's wait and see, ay

sometimes mileage can mean nothing  my old s-reg in the drive has done 80odd k but had a y-reg 4mo with 195k before i sold it
-
Once I've modded it I'm going to get a remap and the one I've got now has done 110k so a new fuel pump would have been a good idea. Won't need to do that on the newer one. Also I've of the studs is broken on my turbo so I was probably gonna get a custom exhaust so they sorted it all out. This way I'll iust get a decat downpipe and catback exhaust which will be a lot cheaper. Silver linings.... :)

my s-reg is on its 3rd fuel pump  and as said its only done 88k so dont think a car with less miles will have less problems
-
Haha well cheers for pissing on my fireworks. I guess I'm in for a lot of disappointment over the coming years ;)

have your insurance company decided what is happening with your other car
-
I had a missed call today so I googled it and it was a salvage company. I think that says it all lol. They said it's down on there system as a write off bit engineers will still check it out before any final decision is made

did the insurance company not even tell you it was being sent to a salvage company
-
Nah just said it was being taken to a garage to be looked at. I guess when they said it's going to be 'looked at' at a garage it's the same as if someone takes their poorly nan on 'holiday' to Switzerland.... ;)

what if they decide to repair it and you have bought a new car
-
That has crossed my mind you know but the company who have given me my courtesy car declined taking on the repairs without even seeing it because they think it's a scrap jobbie, and my insurer who now have to deal with it obviously are pretty much saying the same. I'd be surprised if it doesn't get binned. If I did get stuck with 2 cars id sell the new one I reckon and keep the original. I can't see it happening though, the missus said it doesn't drive right and I never even mentioned that to my insurer and they're still talking about scrapping it anyway. We'll see soon enough I guess

mind ask them much they want for the car
-
I just phoned them to check they don't mind me swapping cars and they said its down as a total loss on their system which is way the salvage people phoned me.... I'll let you know how much they want for it
-
So I just met the guy, car was a nice sort of candy blue, one door a little scuffed on the edge where it must have been scrapped into something but not too bad. Good paperwork and everything. Then he says that it's not the 6 speed like he'd said.... That was a deal breaker for me. Am I right in thinking that means it wasn't a 180 and my brembos wouldn't have fitted and it could also have just had the ko3 turbo rather than the ko3s?? Am I right for passing it up? The lie on its own was enough to walk away but was the car not what I want either?
Thanks

any 1.8t after a 2001 will have a k03s and your brembo brakes will fit any golf not just a 180 and your right in saying only the 180bhp came with 6 speed box unless converted like my old s-reg
-
I thought the rear discs were only vented on the 180? Also I thought I read that it seems that vw were just grabbing parts off the shelves sometimes and you could get newer ones with older turbos??
-

they used a k03s from 2001 onwards you might be right about the discs
-
Yeah I am coz I bought the wrong ones first of all and had to send them back lol. That's what I get for believing the eBay parts compatibility charts...... So it's back on the hunt again. Damn....
-
You are right about the discs, the engine is essentially the same bar the gearbox. It will map to the same as an AUM.
-
Surely having a 6th gear is an improvement over just the 5 though and is worth taking into consideration?
-
Surely having a 6th gear is an improvement over just the 5 though and is worth taking into consideration?
Nope, those in the know (prawny etc) say that the gearing of the 5 speed box is better suited to the engine than the 6 speed box.
-
Are the ratios further apart or anything like that? I guess if a 5 and 6 speed were in a race it wouldn't be neck and neck until the top of 5th when the 6 speed would change up and pull away? I guess the 5s gears are further apart so the top speeds are similar??
-

mine feels better than any of the 5 speeds i have owned on the motorway
-
iirc 1-5 are the same on both 5 and 6 speed cars, just 6th is even more of a crusing gear.
or 1-4 are the same on both then 5th and 6th are the same on the 5 speed and 6 speed just the 6 speed has an extra gear stuck in to make it more responsive in 5th iirc.
could be entirely wrong though...
also on the subject of ages and miles etc. remember that newer isn't always best, my old s reg golf had 0 problems in 3 years (because all the common faults had been fixed and things that wear down had been replaced) however I know people who have bought early 2000's golfs and had nothing but problems cause it hadent reached an age/milage when things go wrong when the bought it therefore leaving them to foot all the bills for repaires
-
I don't mean to tee you up to play the old "as long as it's been well looked after, it don't matter" card, but what mileage is high mileage when you have no real idea how the car has been looked after? Seen some around the 130-140k mark, is that higher than you would want to buy at or should I consider even ones like that?
Thanks
