Title: gti 8v wont tick over when warm
Post by: mr mk2 on 28 November 2013, 13:03
So last night I took a gamble on a cheap mk2 gti 8v, I got it home but by that time it was to dark to do anything so up at the crack of dawn thismorning to see whats what and I can get it to start off of a jump start but once its warmed up it will start running lumpy and cut out. Any ideas? There doesnt seem to be any air leeks and all wires ect seem to be connected.

Digifant?

Check the throttle closed/idle microswitch on the throttle body.

Few easy things you can unplug when it's running to see if they are working. Firstly try the blue temp sender on the coolant flange at the front of the head. It should start to run really lumpy when unplugged. You could try the idle control unit, again unplug it when the engine is running to see if it was doing anything. You could also try the throttle switch which is located just behind the throttle body, again if there is no effect when it's unplugged it may not being working.

Right just a quick update, ive tried unpluging various plugs as suggested and found that whatever I unplugged no differance appart from blue temp sender which made it run slightly better but not perfect ive replaced this but still the problem's there I have however found that the knock sensor is not bolted to the engine as its been smashed :-/ could this b the cause of my problem? Obviously I will replace anyway ;-)

Knock sensor is a good start.

tighten the sensor to 20NM

20nm is nothing, be careful when fitting it. To test it when it's working get the engine running and up to temp and tap the block next to the knock sensor with a big spanner or something. There is probably a better way but this works just don't hit the sensor. The idle should change when you hit it. Has changing the blue temp helped, if the sensor is new with no change have a look at the wiring?

Changing the temp sender hasnt made a differance still runs slightly better with it unplugged, well I say unplugged but I mean un wired as the plug has been snapped off so just wired with 2 connectors :-/

Something is way off then, when I unplug my sensor it goes from smooth-ish idle to a super lumpy near stalling idle.

Very strange mines better unplugged :-/. Can any1 tell me if the knock sensor off of any other cars would work as I cant get my hands on 1 until next week but have access to a mk3 gti 16v abf if I replace what I use?

the knock sensor doesn't come in to operation until engine is up to a certain temp which might explain why its running fine when cold. I had an agg knock sensor on mine. cable is shorter but it just reachs the plug and no more. runs great to.

Short the idle switch wiring. It should settle.

Hi, sorry to hi jack.

What is the knock sensor and where can I find it?

I have a very similar problem on a 16v

The knock sensor is a black wire thats bolted to the block somewhere near the altinator with a 3 pin plug attatched to it. Hope that helps

Another update......
Ive now fitted a new knock sensor and blue temp sender but still wont tick over and hunts could this b an over fueling problem as the exhaust fuems smell quite rich or is that just cuz I keep starting it repeatedly? If it is a fueling issue does any1 know how to adjust it?

Oh ive also fitted another plug onto the temp sender does it matter which way round its wired up as the new plug has differant coloured wires

with your engine warmed up and idling try operating the full throttle microswitch on top of throttle body and see what that does. failing that. check the wires going to the switches carefully for breakage.

Sussed it........ I think. After loads of head scratching and hunting for the elusive haynes manual Ive gone back out and had another look and found that the little gold screw just underneath the throttle linkage (not sure what it is until I find the haynes manual im assuming mixture) had been turned all the way in, so ive now turned it out 1/2 turn and its ticking over just under 1000 rpm (its abit high I know but atleast its ticking over now :-D)

That is the idle screw not the mixture screw, as that is on the AVF unit so your mixture should be okay but worth getting it checked in case the previous owner has fiddled with that as well if only to save you some money on fuel if nothing else.
