My golf had its mot today, failed on a few small things easy fix BUT also on emitions .... spoke to garage and they tried using fuel cleaner, didnt work,,, So what else could i do to get the emitions down and what sort of rough price wpold i be looking at to solve this problem..

Number one what fuel cleaner did they use and how did they attempt to clean it?
If they used "Redex" and just ran it thru the engine for a few mins they need shooting.
Go to halfords and buy a product called "Slick 50" its about £15.99 but it works, Pop in a full bottle of that when your fuel light comes on, then fill your tank then take it for a run up the motorway, stretch your gears then take it for another emissions test, if it fail then id be check O2 sensors or poss your cat?

i couldnt tell you what they used or how they done it, im at sea just now so giving orders vis email.... they did say it could also be lanbda sensor or cat or mabey wiring????? The mrs did have a shot of the car and she said she smelt fuel so would that point to the cat perhaps?
-
It's could be running rich mate due to boost leak or dirty tb
-
Mine never passes emissions, I don't have the cat fitted.

how do you get ur mot then?
-
Friendly mot tester
-
if it smells of petrol then chances are its running rich, sort out this problem and it will hopefully sort out the emissions problem.
iirc redex isnt that good for mk4 golfs? so i would try to avoid using that.
-
Scan the car for faults.

You need to diagnose the cause first. Have you scanned for fault codes?

Check the MAF, o2 sensor and EGR valve

going to give that slick 50 a go for the simple fact when the car got mot,d it would have been sitting nearly 2 weeks and then when the other half drove it down to garage dout she went above 25, S o im putting that in and driving 28 mile to a old garage i used to use to get them to check the emissions then and if still over im leaving it there and they can deal with it,lol.... good garage tho i must add
-
Good lad u won't regret that slick 50

Good lad u won't regret that slick 50
and got it for £12 on ebay
-
Just read the add the lad had up when selling the car.. Its de-cated on the downpipe, would this also have an effect?

yes
-
Yes a decat will fail mot = high emissions hence why I won't decat my car. However I would be interested to see if slick 50 would help you pass.

il still give it a try, save the garage doing my exhaust.
-
If you're running a decat you won't get the emissions low enough to pass an MOT. You'll either have to find a 'friendly' MOT tester or fit a cat/sports cat

Im hoping my mot tester is going to be friendly, used to use him before i moved so making a 50 mile round trip to him so he can do the car, if not then he cat put on cat,
-
It's a straight fail if you have no cat whether you pass the emissions or not according to my MOT tester

You need to find a new tester then

I never said he fails my car lol
