i have a operating system at work on one of the laptops and Technicians have told me its VAG COM could this be true and what am i looking for to know for sure.

The key to it is either a genuine lead, or a hooky ebay lead, which may only give you basic functions.

Genuine lead will be black and have a serial number on it

Got a lead off eBay and a disc with the software going to give it a go today.
