Title: Measuring exhaust for new back box - Ashley original system
Post by: Mart8V on 24 November 2013, 10:07
Hi All,

Right- Have a back box on my new 8V which is so loud that I can't hear my kids from the back seat and it needs to go.  Will be putting a standard one back on!

Question- the whole system is an aftermarket with a 4 branch which will be staying on.  The EXTERNAL pipe diameter is 2.25" (57/58mm) according to the vernier on the centre pipe (flange on back box obviously wider) which would leave me needing a 16v back box to fit on it all.  Am I correct in A- where to measure and B- the standard diameter of the 16v pipes?

Thanks!

ED- Have taken the punt and ordered new part.  Will see!

On the silencers it might say what make of exhaust it is. That size external diameter sounds like it would have an internal of 2" which is standard for 8v. The 16v has a standard internal of 2.5" which is bigger than what you currently have on.

You sure about the 2.5 for the 16v?  I thought it was 2 1/4 inches?

Oh, and outside casing is so dirty etc that I can't find any markings, sadly.  Looking at the Scorpion boxes on the TSR site they list both 8v and 16v as the same bore.  Confused!

Thought I had this sorted and am now just hacked off.....

System starts with a four-branch (great!) which is 2" outer dia at the connection to the front silencer. Then it steps up from 2" on the front end of that section to 2.25" (16v?) and that is the trend all the way back. ED- Looks as though this is an Ashley system.

The system is way too loud for me so bought a standard 16V rear box thinking it would fit- it doesn't, as the centre box outlet is EXACTLY the same diameter as the rear box inlet where it goes over the beam.

Options:
A- Buy a complete 8V system

B- Buy a 16V front and centre box to match the rear.  BUT- Is the inlet on a 16V front silencer 2" or 2.25"?  Where does the diameter step up?

Have tried lots of searches on this and am now just getting tired of it!

Any help much appreciated!

How far off is it? There is none in my area but if you can find a good exhaust place (not just a fitters) they have tools that can expand the ends on a pipe so could stretch it to the correct size.

The two pipes are the same diameter to it would need to be expanded by about 2mm all round.....

get yourself a 4"long piece of exhaust that will go over both sections and join with 2 clamps and plenty gum. like a joining sleeve.

Thanks, will look into that. Will only be a temp fix as the remainder will need doing soon, I suspect......

You can buy a sleeve for the specific job. Just type 'vw exhaust sleeve' into ebay.

Ideally id just get a std 16v mid silencer ( the big suitcase one) then get a custom straight pipe made to replace centre silencer between downpipe and mid silencer. Cheapest way :)

Great, thanks Gambit.  No issues with the "suitcase" fouling anywhere?  I am guessing not....

nah it'll be grand.

you can see the std system inc the suitcase silencer in this pic. then you get a custom straight pipe to run from downpipe to suitcase. The reason you need a custom pipe is to cater for the different diameter between downpipe & suitcase

only thing i would advise is get a decent exhaust hanger for the one located in front of the suitcase silencer

one of these

people may tell you to replace the suitcase instead with a custom pipe and run a std front silencer but trust me its still loud as hell

ive a Milltek 4 branch downpipe, std 16v front silencer , supersprint link pipe (replaces suitcase) and supersprint backbox and its LOUD

but the supersprint backbox might be making it louder than it would be with a standard backbox and a mid silencer delete.

Yeah but ive had suitcase in before i put link pipe in. Supersprint is a quiet backbox compared to others. Loudness doesnt bother me car only does about 1000 mile a year tops

Cheers for all the input.  Went with a 60.5mm sleeve which JUST went over the pipes as a temp measure.  Car now has the nice original rasp without the booming of the Ashley system.  Once the mid box goes I will probably go with the standard 8v set up as I am hoping to keep the car as original as possible.

Well, that is until I want firmer handling, more power, lower looks etc, etc!

Those posts for power and handling etc I will expect to see posted off you next week then.

Trying to remain sensible in my old age! Just enjoying the car as it is at the moment. Reluctant to do too much to what is an original car. Always wanted to do an Abf conversion on my old silver 5dr but never got round to it.....
