Title: 2001 MK 4 S - Very Little Power
Post by: lavster on 23 November 2013, 13:36
Hi I wondered if some people could shed some advice?
I've had the car about 6 months, theortically speaking there are no problems with it.
But going up hills the car really really struggles and going on Motorways once it gets up to 70mph and even lower it really struggles. I know its quite a weighty car but for a 1.4 16v the power in it is really quite terrible.
I've tried the air filter change and piled redex / injector cleaner in but nothing seems to help.

Also the fuel economy is absolutely terrible, i put about £20 in a week and that gets me about 60 miles!

Any advice would be most appreciated.

actually I had an error code about 3 months back that showed running rich. Switched it off though and its not come back. Anyway to pinpoint which sensor it would be?

ps thanks for the advice :)

In all honesty it's probably just because it's a small engine in an old car

You're poor consumption is probably down to having to thrash the car to get it anywhere.

My dad had this engine in his MK4. Its quicker to walk

75bhp in a big heavy car = pointless

Running rich won't help your cause either

In all fairness I had a 1.6 and it wasn't thaaat slow when we are talking about a crappy cheap to insure car. I.e quicker than 1.2 Corsas etc and cars of that league.

Would be surprised if the 1.4 was that much slower.

In true style the 1.6 blew it's gearbox at 146k and sold to a breaker and made a 60 quid profit on the car haha.

A 1.6 can do 20-80mph in 5 seconds........

Some supercars struggle with that....
