Title: Pinking or cam chain?
Post by: Judderi on 23 August 2005, 11:26
When accelerating on cheap petrol i get a rattling type sound from the engine and i loose a little power. But when im running on LPG i never get the noise. Then i noticed when running on higher RON petrol i.e optimax the noise is significantly reduced. I thought at 1st that it was the cam chan flapping about and rattling but now im wondering if this is what pinking sounds like. If it is pinking do i just need the timing set up correctly?

my 16v's have always been ok on what ever fuel, but as your running lpg also is the timing different for that?? dont know much about lpg but i know timing has to be altered for diffo fuels, knock sensors usually adjust timing to suit, but on the 16v they dont have them i think... i could be wrong... havent got one to go look at at the mo...

No knock sensor, and sounds like pinking.

Next obvious question then, how do i solve it? Do i just need to advance or retard the timing by twisting the distributor? Or is now a good time to get it rolling road tuned like i have been wanting to do for ages?

Set it up on 98 RON fuel. Advance timing slightly if required. Rolling Road best way but more $
