As I have 8v the ecu has to be chipped and soldered in
So I went to a computer specialist and they soldered a EPROM socket in for me and I fitted the chip in but now have no spark or fuel.
Now the solders's couldn't get solder on to 3pins so this is probably my fault but
My question is - is the chip the right way round in the socket as I'm not sure if they soldered the socket in the right way round
And what's the chance of it being blank ?

There is a little triangle cut out piece underneath the chip that is pin 1 if it is not soldered properly the chip wont work or u might have a blank chip alls i can suggest is either u get it resoldered in again or put the old chip back in
-
Have the chips out but can see a triangle just the b!tches in the end of the chip.
When they removed my old chip they broke a leg and has bits of solder on so can't get the original one back in
I've read that with vagcom its fairly straight forward to swap the ecu?
Need it back on the raid ASAP and I'm well put off this chip nuisances now
-
Thts an early mk3 ecu is your car 1993? if it has a chip in the key u will have to buy another ecu with keys and transponder theres loads of 8v ecus but early ones im not to sure

Mines a 1996 mk3 but its only a 1.8 ADZ
I've read with vagcom ecu's can be swapped over ?
-
Chip soldering nightmares are not what I need to be reading right now.
-
Have you not got a tuning specialist near you that could do it easily.
-
Only this morning I've discovered that there is infact a new chip tuning company about 2 miles away so fingers crossed they'll undertake the installation of another companies product.
Failing that I've just made an enquiry with a local TV / HIFI repair specialist that appear to know their electronics pretty damn well.
-
They should do. TSR up the road from me do. Just labour cost to them.
-
Pulled a code out of it today saying ecu wiring fault so its something to do with the chip Or soldering
So I'm going to try find someone or else or will have to Chang the ecu
Found the procedure on vagcom
This procedure details how to swap engine control modules on VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda vehicles with Immobilizer I.

1 Determining IMMO-ID
2 ECU Swapping
Determining IMMO-ID
[Select]
[25 - Immobilizer]
or in vehicles with Immobilizer included in Instrument Cluster
[17 - Instruments]
Look at the first "Extra" field. You should see something like: Immo-ID VWZ7Z0W0648696.

ECU Swapping
Prerequisites:
Battery voltage at least 12.0 V.

[Login - 11]
4-digit PIN
Enter zero followed by the 4-digit PIN. For example, if your PIN is 1234, enter 01234.
[Do it!]

[Read]
[Save]
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
Switch OFF the ignition and after 5 seconds switch it ON again.
Make sure NOT to start the car within the next 2 minutes. After that, try starting the engine.
But how do I get the pin that's spoken off ?

-
That looks really shoddy mate, it's no surprise it won't work.
-
one of the pins is missing solder
-
Yea I'm glad I never paid them for it !
I'm going to solder the pins again my self in the morning and hope or else I'm changing the ecu
-
Also check under the socket as it may have tracks on both sides of the PCB. hopefully the chip will be ok but it is possible to damage both chip and ECU if the tacks are not soldered correctly or they have dry joints.
-
Right I checked all pins on the chip against the motherboard with a bolt metre and every pin is making contact from the pin to where the other end if the board goes as such
So my ecu is pronounced dead , even caf come won't read it anymore !
New ecu going in tomorrow and its going to a proper mapping company down the road I didn't even know about for a custom map

I would save your money, on a 1.8 any gain will be tiny.
-
I completely agree with you , BUT I'm attached to the car and dont want to change it so even for a small gain I'm willing to give it ago
-
Ecu swapped over this evening but seem to have a problem with my timing now
Sure its timed up right but will check in the morning
Revs up fine from standstill but takes a while to start and pops and bang lots and is very very slow

Seems strange, is it the correct ecu for the year/model
-
The ecu is the same part number and was removed from the same car model as mine
Will check up on it in the morning
-
A small update for you guys , I fitted a new ecu this evening to the car , I replaced the original ecu with one of the same part numbers and from the same car a 1.8se manual ,
Coded in with vagcom and its running now , when on idle no problems revs up fine ect
When I drive it its awfull no power pops and bangs every gear change and is undriveable
It is exactly how it was when I had the timing out before so need to recheck that in the morning otherwise need to look in to it as it takes a while to start aswell.
Its deffo ignition related.
Any ideas need thus sorted ASAP
-
Just take it to a garage.
-
What colour is the exhaust smoke white will indicate fuel pump timing is incorect
-
Right I sorted it this morning just took some head scratching
I adjusted my dizzy and it ran fine but revved high
So I put it back and went on vagcom and put it in to
Basic settings got a strobe light out and timed it up and set the timing at 6"
And it runs perfect now
Jut shows perseverance pays off and car
is all sorted now
Thanks for all your help guys !
