Title: Basic wiring problem

Mk2 Golf, audio connectors in dash - Does anyone know why I'm getting 5v on what is meant to be a 12v line, and 1.2 volts on the permanent live?

Permanent live is supposedly yellow? Ignition live is red?

And why occasionally with this stereo, if I measure the voltage in another block (closer to stereo), 5v becomes 12v?

Thoroughly confused.

That screams high resitance mate corrosion in your power lines i'd replace those two lines or follow them and look for breaks corrosion etc
