Title: Warming Up??
Post by: billabong on 19 November 2013, 09:08
How long does your TDI take to warm up?
I drove about 20 minutes to work this morning and it didnt warm up by the time I got there.
Last night I changed the thermostat because it never seemed to get warm. After sitting with the revs at about 1.5k for 20 minutes it finally got up to temperature...
Cheers
Will

thats a long warm up! mine takes about 10minutes but it has a lower opening temperature stat in so tuns cooler anyway. are you going from the gauge temperature or the heater temperature? also you might have a too strong coolant/wTer mix in there

Mine takes forever to warm up as well and was thinking of replacing the thermostat, it does eventually reach 90 degrees but only when sat in heavy traffic. On the move it barely goes past 70 degrees which is too cool as far as I'm aware.
What i have learnt recently though is that the TDI engines do not actually warm up properly when sat idling for ages and need to be under load so it is best to drive them asap and even if the engine is still cold whilst sat in traffic it's best to put some electrical load onto it to help raise the temperature sooner.

changed the temp sensor on mine because it wasn't even moving at one point it now moves to 90 but takes an age to do so.

If its really cold frosty I drive in low gears and drive it pretty hard seems to warm up quicker but as already said if your sat in traffic from cold takes a while to get upto full tempreture..
