theres a road that i drive along regularly with what i can only describe as a trench going from one side to the other. it looks like where they have dug it the road up at some point and refilled it but its sunk.
when ever i go over this my engine cuts out and all the dials drop.
it dont normally drive down there when its dark but tonight i had to and so all my lights went out part from my side lights and could hardly see anything.
its not to bad, as it only seems this particular bit of road but scared it will happen when the girlfriend is driving and it all goes wrong!
this ever happened to anyone else before? any one got a guess as to waht it is?

no one??

sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere and it it causing problems on a bumpy road.
Not a common problem from what i have experienced sounds like you need to go through the wiring on your light as they are injunction with dials as i have a problem when i turn my lights on my dial spaz out and reset so somewhere in the wiring the use same earth/live and one can cause problems with the other.
-
so you think it has something to do with the headlight wiring?
im just worried this will be untraceable!
-
got many keys on your keychain?
sounds like the ignition switch is a goner
-
yeh the ignition switches are a common fault i had a problem that my car wouldnt turn off  it was like having a turbo timer as it still ran when the key was turned off and taken out  the switch is cheap enough but a complete ball ache to replace
-
i dont have that many but i have recently added another key lol
thanks guys i will have a look into this!

i reckon its could be the crank impulse sensor, the wires go brittle right where the wires go into the sensor and when your driving the speedo and rev counter bounce about.

could that also cause the engine to cut out?
-
Without doubt.

That Started happening to me, the ignition switches are problematic. Replaced mine yesterday and had no problems so far...
-
thanks for the help guys.
added to the list.. lol

just been out looking at this. i know next to nothing about the ignition switch and that whole area.
i turned the car on and was messing about with the keys to try and get the car to cut out with out driving it. the only way i would get it to cut out was buy turning the key again. however it only took a very slight turn back to get it to cut out, with very little force.
is this still looking like the ignition switch?
thanks!

unfortunately any major short somewhere can cause the car to cut out...but as i understand it you can start your car again and it turns over and runs....(after your bumpy road ride). So the crank sensor is working (maybe it only cuts out sometimes...but maybe not). This part is expensive to replace if you replace it with a good quality part and cheap if you replace it with a cheap part. Take a look at it on your car and if any of the wiring is exposed on the crank sensor which is hidden away behind the oil filter...(it will look like a plug stuck into the engine block...(usually they are black..) I suggest that you don't touch it i you don't have to as the whole thing can fall to bits i it is old...(you have been warned) mine did that..if I had not touched it I would of saved me 60 quid (but sooner or later it would have went.)
The ignition barrel is cheap about a tenner but a lot of work to replace (i have not done it yet but most likely will have to in the near future as everyone has to change this part...)
The crank sensor change is no picnic either if it is hidden behind the front engine mount as you will have to take the starter off.....and then it can be a pain lining it back up again....
if you jiggle the key and then it starts/or stops suddenly when already running then it is the ignition switch...simply take of all of your keychains etc and extra weight on the key itself..and just put the key in the ignition..this will hopefully prevent it from moving when it goes over bumps and then you can keep your car going for a little while until you replace your ignition switch....:).
If you think it is your lights then drive over the same area with your lights off..and see if the car cuts out or not....then take a look at wiring going to your lights....Germans can't wire anything up to save their lives....it's a cultural thing for them..all of their cars sufer from it....
Hope that helped..
Remember it could be one of these things...more than one thing or something else entirely...get someone to look at your car and they will be able to help you pinpoint the problem..
Just give your location here and maybe another forum member will extend a helping hand...:)

thanks for the advice! yeha ive removed a few un essential keys from the keys to help a bit.
ive got play in the sterring wheel too and been told that the steering joint so will do that at the same time as the ignition switch hopefully.
