If you’re going black circles etc – think long and hard about the tyre monkeys that might be appointed, unless they’re going onto wheels you’re not bothered about keeping pristine. Used a nominated fitter in Westerhope, Newcastle and they scraped 2 alloys with their well-worn plastic coated jemmy bars.

Not good at all .....What was the out come? did you get them to re-furbush them???

I've just bought the Dunlop Winter Sport 4D in 17" from Mytyres. I got the 205/50 fitted to Dezent Matt Black alloy wheels. Not a mark on them - all in cost was £920 delivered. Pricey but they look good too. Nothing like all black wheels for winter.
Good place to start reading

I bought the Dunlops based on their low noise, performance and price.
-
Doug have you got 205 50 17's? I thought the correct size was 16"for the 205's?
-
Doug have you put 16"wheels on? any pictures if you have?
No they are 17" Dezent TD. size for 16" is 205/55 16.
Here's a pic. I'll try and get a pic of the wheels on the car later on this week.

Don't forget the first bigger number is the width of the tyre and the second is the percentage of the the width that is the profile height.
205/50 means 205mm wide and 50%of that is the height of the tyre. You'll notice that the 16" has a higher profile (55) to make up for the smaller rim.

I've just bought my daughter a set of winter alloys / tyres from www.wheelbasealloys.com
I had originally seen the same package on mytyres but wheelbasealloys were prepared to price match and upgrade the tyres and also include a set of wheel nuts.
The biggest advantage for me was they are in the Uk and delivered the following day. Whereas the winter tyres I ordered from mytyres last year took 2 weeks to arrive.
Not connected to them just happy with their service.
-
I also run 205/50/17 Dunlop Winter Sports.
Can also recommend the goodyear ultra grips
Both very good tyres.
in order to save some money i would recommend reading some of the german reviews as some lesser known brands in the UK get very good reviews and can be had a lot cheaper.

Not a very good picture but here are my winter alloys and tyres (Dezent TD plus Dunlop Winter Sport 4D in 17")

Just got reply from dealer, I had asked if he would supply and fit tyres, on the off chance the local tyre fitter damages the alloy when fitting the winters.....So if I got my dealer to fit them and any damage done will be on his sholders
Here is his reply today :
Morning Doug,
Tyres prices are;
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, 225/40/18 – Can only source 3D not 4D = £198.98 + vat each.
Goodyear Ultra grip 8 Performance, 225/40/18 – Unable to source from our suppliers.
Sorry but company policy is only to fit tyres supplied by ourselves.
Regards
David
Now I have done my home work regarding prices to supply
My tyres - delivered
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D - 225/40/18 = £140.70
Good Year Ultra Grip 8 Performance 225/40/18 = £139.90
Oponeo.co.uk - delivered
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D - 225/40/18 = £136
Good Year Ultra Grip 8 Performance 225/40/18 = £140
My local tyre fitter - supply + fitting
as above sizes Dunlops = £174
Good years = £183
My local fitter charges £15 for fitting if i supply myself but was very awkward with me supplying my own tyres!!!
So what do I do???

Looking great , may I ask where you bought the wheels and tyres and also who fitted them for you?
Many thanks, Andy
-
Yes Andy. Tyres came on the wheels from www.mytyres.co.uk
Just select wheel and tyre packages from the left hand menu. Enter your car as a 226bhp PP model if you only want the choice of 17" wheels. 16" wheels are much cheaper.
They are Dezent 17 alloys with 17" 205/50 17 93H Dunlop 4D. All in they cost £920 fitted, balanced and delivered. I put them on the car myself and my Austins are in a cupboard in my spare room in VW alloy wheel bags which cost £25 from my dealer. I had to buy the stickers for the centre caps from ebay. Any 60mm ones will do.
-
Thanks doug, that great info. I must admit I am not very knowledgeable regarding offsets etc, are these wheels equivalent to the original VW wheels, same bolts etc, any special spacers needed. Basically are they easy to fit?
-
Wheels have an offset of 48, which is the same as standard. There are no spacers and the wheels use the original bolts. The black plastic covers won't fit though, although I believe Audi ones do. It's literally remove the standard wheels and put the replacement on.

German lightweight wheels TUV approved for Golfs, and a good deals on Goodyear Ultra 8ss as recommended by autoexpress

Just a note that I ordered and cancelled when mrwinterwheels were unable to provide the mention TUV certs for the steel wheel options for Golf MK7. I will reorder when they can.

Well chaps, went for the Dunlop SP winter 4D yesterday from one of my local tyre fitters, (Turriff Tyres)
Got not a bad price £155 fitted inc VAT , so they will be here next week, but my Gti is not here till mid Dec, so he's keeping them aside for me till my car arrives.....
Am getting them just now due to the bad forcast we are getting for this winter, and just because the mad rush for winters are going to be mental, and sure as a cats a hairy beast, the prices will rocket through the roof!!!!
