Title: Changing the glove box and boot light bulbs
Post by: sam67GTD on 09 November 2013, 12:41
For those of you who have changed the bulbs in the glovebox and boot for LED's, how did you manage to get the glass perspex covers off? I've been trying for 30 minutes and can't seem to shift any of them

The vanity lights were simple to do

Well obviously, no one has changed the bulbs yet!

I've done both.

Glovebox
just use your fingers (no tools required) and prise the light out and down out of the aperture. Disconnect the cable (making sure it doesn't disappear back inside). With the light out, use a tiny flat screwdriver and pass it up the gap between the plastic lens and the metal heat shield cage that surrounds it at each of the 4 corners. You will see 4 small notches in each corner of the heat shield, just lever these out very slightly and the heat shield slides off upwards. With the shield off, the bulb then becomes easily accessible.

Boot
From memory, this is even easier as there's no heat shield covering the whole of the back. Just lever the light out of it's housing (there is a small screwdriver cut out at the end you need to remove first).  Once the unit is out and unclipped from the harness, just pop the festoon bulb and and replace with the LED version.

On both just remember that LED's unlike conventional filament bulbs, only work one way round (polarity). So if the light doesn't illuminate at first, just pop the bulb round 180° and try again.

Which four LED bulbs do I need for this LED conversion
I also hear that you can swap the dynamic headlight cornering bulb too, any recommendations?

Dear fellow BW46er, dynamic headlight cornering bulb is...the xenon bulb itself, "dynamic" is the ability of the xenon bulb housing to turn. You're probably referring to the static cornering light bulb which is a halogen one. Any (pretty white) H7 would do. X-treme vision or Nightbraker is good enough and reliable, but there are "whiter" ones on the market. Check the PIAAs too.

Never tried them but I wonder how good the LED H7 bulb replacements are? Would give a proper white light (although probably at the expense of light output)

Light output on the static cornering lights isn't huge due to the blinkered housing that pushes the light out of the sides, so LED bulbs might not be a bad way to go. I have Nightbreaker plus on mine (because I already had them).

Thanks Norbreck21a, you're a gent!

I've given up changing these, they will not budge. I can get the boot light (the clear plastic lens) to move back slightly, but I will not pull out. I can't see anyway to remove the glove box light as it's in a nigh impossible location to grip and I've small hands.

I've found this too with the boot light. Managed to get a screwdriver in the slot but moderate pressure wont budge it. Don't want to really force it and be faced with a broken lens cover

A bit of an update on this. Met up with MkVIIGTD at the weekend and as he has done the mod, he changed my boot light. It's not the Perspex glass that needs to come out (this won't budge), but you need to take out the whole grey plastic surround which you can see around the Perspex cover. You will still need a screwdriver to remove it.

Nice one, thanks for the update. Good job I didn't force it. I'll have another go tomorrow, presumably it just pops out and there are no screws holding it in?

Yup your bang on there,, push screwdriver in around the large grey trim surround and pop it downwards and it should come out with a little gentle talking too lol

So I finally got round to ordering and then trying to fit the boot light - easy job done in seconds. The glove box light not as easy managed to get it out and open

Somewhat confused the bulb that's in there and the LED I purchased two different size and fit bulbs

Can someone advise which bulb I should be purchasing the LED in the pic is a 42mm festoon

Whilst I am here how easy are the static cornering bulbs to change as I have purchased the h7 nightbreaker unlimited.

Thanks in advance.

Somewhat strange as I replaced my boot bulb with an LED festoon one today.  You should've have that light holder in there, that is a W5W bulb, you can get these in LED form so not anything to worry about.

Incidentally I'm looking for the housing you have so I can use it for the footwell with a W5W bulb (different coloured).  Can you please let me know the part number that's on the unit?  Would help me in my search without speaking to the dealers :)

The static cornering bulbs are dead easy to change, probably the easiest i've done! Just remove the round cap from the rear of the unit, quarter turn anti clockwise, and lightly push DOWN on the bulb holder and it'll pop out, do the reverse to refit, simples! ;)

No holder in the boot. I will get the part number for you tomorrow if i get a chance. However, car going into vw for the suspension issues. As soon as I get a minute I will get the part number.

The w5w bulb do you know where I can get the led equivalent.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but you make this sound so easy. How the hell do you remove the glovebox light? I can't prise anything as it's all flush and sealed with nothing to prise on?
