1986 Golf Gti 8v
Hi folks, straight to it! If i go out to the car now it will fire up and run fine. If i leave it running for a couple of minutes and turn off it will fire again no probs but.. If i leave it running for say 20-30 mins switch off then try and fire again... Nothing just cranks and cranks but no fire! Yet if i leave it say 2-3hrs it fires up again first time!
With a little more detail on first fire, it cranks for 5-6secs then go silent like somethings stook in compression, cranks again for 5-6secs silent again.. then fires?
Thanks lance

Is the engine overheating atall, is the fan coming on?
-
Ye the fan kicks in when needed an its aroumd that time that if i kill the engine then try to re-fire it doesnt wanna go!
-
my 85 gti doesnt like it when its hot either, pretty sure its something to do with the fuel air mix, seems to flood instantly, it goes if i remember to get on the loud pedal before i turn the key

Ye its Strange! No idea why it doesnt like being warm? Want to know why it pauses like battery flat before start up too? Wanting to get it done as we moving house and im wanting to drive it instead of towing! :)

Could it be the starter motor? Mine was doing this a while back, gradually got worse until it wouldn't start at all. Swapped the starter and it fires 1st time every time now. (for a time I just carried a hammer and hit the starter until the thing started )

Probably totally unrelated, but mine used to do this and I may have fixed it by accident when the fuel gauge stopped working. The plug on the sender unit on the top of the tank, accessed by the round hole in the boot floor was loose. Since plugging it back in, it's started on the button every time.

May seem odd, but i'd try another battery to start with, or at least get it tested

How old are your plugs? Wouldn't hurt to try a new set anyway

My MK3 Did the same thing and in the end would not start again and it was down to crank sensor and when plugged in showed no faults.
I broke down and it would not start when waiting for AA 2 hours later he arrived and it started 1st time then shortly cut out i changed crank sensor and it worked fine this may not be your problem but worse case you could try this.

Thanks for the replies! Well ive only just serviced the car with all new spark plugs aswel as cambelt and clutch! Ive only had the car 2 months and when i fisrt got it it didn fire at all so a little fault finding found that the main fuel pump under the car wasnt working so replaced that but i also put a new rubber boot on the lifter so ill go check that plug to make sure if not ill do the crank sensor! Before i bought it the car was stood in a garage for 13 years so maybe a bottle of redex as a lad mensioned at work might help?
