Title: From build week to delivery
Post by: Geoff_H on 06 November 2013, 11:35
I know this might be a little difficult to answer accurately, but can any UK buyers tell me how long it took between commencement of build to receiving their new vehicle?

I have a MK7 GTi on order (very standard apart from Limestone Grey paint and winter pack) and I have just seen on the tracker that build commences week beginning 24th November.  The dealership originally told me "3rd week in Jan" but it looks like I may get it earlier now.

Just interensted to get an idea so I can make arrangements for my existing car.

If you need it sooner, you can get your dealer to pick it up from the port.

When I worked at VW I had some guy who wanted a Polo GTI so badly, I drove him to the port in my demo, he drove my car back, and I drove his car on trade plates. Saved a 2 week delivery.

@Geoff_H

It takes on average 3 1/2 to 4 weeks from commencement of build to arrival at the dealers.

Of course there a lots of variables including, parts shortages, sitting at the port of Emden, shipping delays due to adverse weather, sitting in a compound in a UK port and possible delays transporting to the dealership. Any of those could stretch your delivery, but hopefully not

Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone.  I had actually been hoping to get it in March and avoid its first winter, but I guess I have added the Winter Pack   Somehow don't think I'll ask them to sit on it until March if it is ready in Dec/Jan.

I was wondering the same. My car is due to be built the same week as yours (24th November). The dealer told me I would receive my car in the second or third week in December...early Xmas present to myself! :-)

just be aware that some cars seem to be in the build process for 2 0r 3 weeks  once they enter the build week before starting the next stage
if you are lucky like me it went into build week then within  3 days  later it was in transit to the docks
completely missed the in build stage on the tracker system
them it depends on which ship it booked on it can sit at the docks up to 3 weeks
so from build to delivery can average 5 / 6 weeks

I thought cars were restricted until they were pdi'd? ie speed limited. Also would it not damage the suspension driving a long distance with the transport blocks in?

another dealer done it a few months ago fro one of the early arrivals.

In transport mode I think the car is limited to 30mph but would be concerned if driving more than 20-30 miles with transport blocks in based on others previous experience of them being missed at PDI.

Well you're meant to pick it up on a flatbed, but we didn't have one spare, and this guy really wanted the car. The dealership was close the port anyway.

To my knowledge (although I am not a techy so probably completely wrong) same rules apply to a non pdi'ed car as anything with trade plates. Maximum speed of 50 mph. Although no one does that, and the police don't enforce it.
