Title: Navigation updates for November
Post by: Sootchucker on 06 November 2013, 07:58
Just a quick heads up guys, Navtec have just released the new Navigation updates (November 2013) for the Discover Nav Pro & Discover Media

Links.

Discover Pro

Thanks for the link.

My internet connection benchmarks at 60Mb and usually downloads 3GB files in under 15 minutes, but it's downloading very slowly from this site. After 15 minutes, it's averaging just 186kb/sec and it still says it going to take more than 12 hours to download!

Anyone else tried this?

How many times can you update the system? Im sure GeorgeK said 6 times in three years but how do VW know that you have downloaded the software?

I'm just reading that copying the data to the Nav Pro can take up to 4 hours and you must have the ignition switched on! What are people's experiences regarding the time taken to upload?

Certainly took a while and did need ignition on however it paused when ignition was off and resumed when back on so over a number of trips the update completed. System worked normally during the update.

Cheers Norbeck!

Wonder if this fixes a peculiar fault that I've noticed, when it's suggesting three routes if you move the map, ie. zoom in or scroll around, when you select a route the nav screen defaults to Wolfsburg and won't follow your car until you press the follow car icon. Nothing major but a bit of a bug.

Mine did something similar but froze completely while it was calculating the three routes and the screen showed Wolfsburg. After a period of switching the media unit and ignition on and off it eventually reset itself

Thanks Andy. Didn't realise you could do the update whilst you were driving. I assumed that the car needed to be stationary with the engine off and you had to sit with the ignition on until it was finished.

Anyone had any luck downloading the single big file and extracting it successfully?

I've downloaded it twice now and both times it has the same Data Error, broken/corrupted files in the archive when extracted with 7zip or WinRAR.

The broken files are for France North East and North West (Total 16) and Italy South (Total 2). I cancelled the extract about 80% in so this may not be all of them.

Didn't have this problem with the July update.

If you let me know which files or directories - I can put them up on DropBox for you :)

Have updated Discover media with 2014 map updates and everything ok except no road names shown on map display, just blank white or black boxes.  Road names shown on instrument display and heard on spoken instuctions.  Any ideas?

Easy - they release it twice a year, and for the next three years ..... :)

If they have been really clever they will have implemented this in the firmware of the head unit, so it won't install updates after 3 years of operation.

so after three years the unit is in effect useless as no updates will be installed? I can't see this happening and I don't think they are that clever. even if you bought an official update it wouldn't install if something was flicked off in the unit. this will be interesting to see how navteq/VW do this.

@moggy where are you from?

After three years, how can it not let you update maps? :undecided:

The firmware could easily have a time or count limit on updates to prevent you continuing to install new map data...unless you purchase a firmware upgrade to allow map updates to continue to be installed.

I hope they haven't been this sneaky...

If the download is freely available from that website (which it is) and you aren't required to enter any authorization details to download it (and I wasn't), then I don't see how they can stop you downloading it beyond 3 years. It's copied onto an SD card. The Nav unit (Discover media) just reads this card, I don't believe it does any validation checks on it.

Besides, there are always ways around it even if they do. I had an RNS 510 in my MK6 and the map updates were easily attainable if you looked hard enough.

What's the process for updating maps on a Nav Pro Unit? The maps are held on the SSD which I obviously don't have access to.

My car manuals are in German (long story, dealer mess up), so any guidance would be appreciated!

Just uncompress onto an SD card and that should be fine

google 7zip for mac

the Discover media guys, did you download the zipped file in one go or one after the other. lf one after the other, do you have to extract each of the segments as I am getting an error message when I try download part 2.

bloody heck it takes ages. it would be quicker to install the actual unit at this rate.

Well, I've updated my Nav Pro with the new November version.

Be aware - it took longer to do the update than it did to download it !!
Took about an hour to download.
Took about 2 and a half hours to upgrade and that was using a Class 10 - 100mb/s SDHC card. The U1 type.

My advice - do it when your heading for a long drive.
Title: Re: Navigation updates for November
Post by: KyleB on 27 December 2013, 21:31
Right, finally got around to attempting this but think I've done something wrong and was hoping you guys could trouble shoot for me.

Downloaded and unzipped the files
Moved them onto an empty SD card
Gone into Settings, Software Version and then Software Update
Get an error message saying no update can be found.

Anyone got any ideas? Reading on the navigation website it seems to suggest using the original sat nav SD card, is that what you have to do? Don't fancy formatting that and losing all the map data.

edit - I should add this is on the Discover Nav (not the fancy nav)

My Pro screen froze on Sunday, so I thought I would update the software this weekend.  I only want to revise the UK maps, as I am not planning to go to foreign parts this year (although another trip to Le Mans is always on the cards). When I go to the VW download site I have the option of a complete download or 17 parts.  Am I able to download just one section to only update the UK maps, and if so, which part number is it?  Also, earlier mention was made about having the original disk.  I've searched and there is nothing with the manual or in the glovebox.  Does this mean a visit back to my dealer?  Any help will be much appreciated.

As I understand it, you can't pick and choose, you need the whole file.

The separate files make the up complete file and are used to allow those with a slower download speed the chance to actually get it. The whole file is about 6GB, which is a lot to download for slower connections.
Title: Re: Navigation updates for November
Post by: Mk1Macca on 17 January 2014, 14:32
For those installing, either I've done it wrong, or it's changed different.

I backed up the map data on the VW supplied SD card
Formatted the card as detailed
Extracted the new map file directly to the card
Put the card in slot 2 of my GTD with Discover Nav
Turned on engine and drove normally
Pressed the Nav button
It showed an updating type screen for about 2 minutes
Screen went back to normal mapping
Total journey time was 10 mins, and when home, the new map must have been initiated because it knew where I lived (new build house) where the old map didn't

Very painless operation to update?
Title: Re: Navigation updates for November
Post by: KyleB on 17 January 2014, 17:22
Yeah on the discover nav all you're doing is updating the maps that are read from the SD card. Don't think it updates any software.

Nav  Pro

I believe you put all of them files into an SD card, don't worry about the fact they're not a 7zip, then go into car menu and at the bottom you'll see software update. It'll take a while but you can turn your car off but you'll not be able to use your nav till its updated.

I just can't do the updates.
I have Nav Pro and downloaded the file in one hit(windows 8.1 took 90 mins) and put it in an unzip app(bandizip), I then unlocked the sd card(32GB class 10)and unzipped the file to the card(took 45mins)
Then removed the card(it said that the file was still open so I had to close it to remove the card) and locked it and put it in SD1/2 slot and went to updates in Nav, the Nav says there
is an error and no data available

How can I check if I have the lastest maps installed? The version information on my Nav says something like this:

5G0919866N 0040 ECE 2014/15

I have seen a screenshot some pages behind that showed hos on VW website the latest version, however now it doesn't. The only info on their website is that the latest available map packs are from May 2014 and  that the next update is expected November 2014.

I read that it is time limit built into the nav itself. I dont know if this is true but would make sense as the maps themselves are freely available from vw's website.
