As the title says i have a set of clear glass lenses for mk3 headlights could i change the standard mk3 headlights to clear ones or does this create to many problems. The standard lenses have a pattern on them im not sure if this is needed or i could modify it so i can use clear lenses but any info would be help full will post pictures later of what i want to do.
-
I was going to do this once but the pattern on the std lenses is to do with the beam pattern so i left it alone
-
you can get mk4 style lights from hella. they are good, aftermarket ones are generally rubbish.
pattern is on the glass to shape the cone of the light.
-
i was thinking the mk4 style headlights don't have this on there lenses so if i was to change them what would it do just blind people, do the standard mk3 headlight not have bulb caps just a pattern on the glass instead.
-
if you swap the complete headlight for mk4 style hellas then ok, i was thinking you only wanted to change the glass itself.
the mk4 has different reflectors that shapes the cone differently, i.e. the glass doesnt need to be patterned.
-
i do want to swap the glass only sorry to confuse you.
Can i make that work clear glass on standard headlight???
-
no doesnt work.
you will need the complete mk4 style headlight.
with your idea all you'd do is blind everybody on the road since you don't have the pattern stopping the stray light that is created by mk3 type reflectors.
-
No changing just the glass will not work.
-
What would I need to modify on the chrome headlight part what does 1 look like.
-
can't be done. or do you have possibility to check in a light box that geometry produces a) good light so you can see and b) does not blind people. headlight manufacturers spend a lot of money on this; for a reason.
And with something modified in this fashion it would certainly not be covered in the headlights E-number, i.e. they would not be allowed on a public road. Blackening some of the parts that are not relevant for lighting is a grey area that you can get away with in this country only, but having a whole custom built headlight would get you fail on MOT and tbh the police should stop you as well.
why don't you just put mk4 style hellas in??
-
well i was going to spray around the chrome domes on the inserts of the mk4 but once apart there is wayto much chrome missing and don't look very good i wasn't clean good looking headlights really il just stick with the standard ones for now then :)
