hi all,
i currently have 16" 9J wheels on my mk3 golf. The tyres are 215/35/16 stretched.
i really want a bit more of a thicker tyre on them, its not going to be fun driving around in the winter with these thin tyres on and its not5 fun if you roll over a stone in the road or anything!
problem is the tyre tread is only just inside the arch so not too sure if i have any other tyre options which would work.
anyone got any ideas?

215/40's?
Or have a shifty for some cheap winter wheels that you don't give two hoots about if you kerb them in the snow.
-
yeah might be a better and possibly cheaper than replacing all the tyres.
stupid question possibly but if i did get 215/40s do they need to be a special type of tyre to be stretched? lol

No.

214/40's are rare (golf anni mk3, some american tat and mgf rears only I believe) so they are not cheap for good one's.
I would buy some alloys for winter and use decent tyres (get some 15's as you can get wheels and winter tyres for under £300)

Not that rare

actually the 215/35's seem harder to get hold of. So the 215/40s will still be able to stretch? what are the rules on stretching tyres i mean is there a maximum profile that can be stretched? can any tyre place do it?
also do you think if i went for 225/40s they would clear in the arches?

ok rare was the wrong word (I should of used uncommon size, and even more so with 215/35)...
and regarding stretch, some tyre places won't touch them so your choice of fitting shops will be more limited. I do know of a mk3 with 7" wide rims running 165's!!
-
Haha, my RS's are 9.5" wide with 215/35's.
Thank god I fitted them myself!

195 40 on a 9" for me, you can go stupid small on any size rim, ive seen tyres where the bead of the tyre doesn't even get anywhere near the rim.
Will be slapping my early 16v rims on for the winter and going for the boneybradley 4x4 look
