Title: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: caravanking on 02 November 2013, 21:44
I have already introduced myself in the newbie section and after looking around here and buying my golf, I have decided to start a thread for my car as I have a few plans for it.

I will introduce myself again just incase; my name is Adrian, i'm 22 and from Sheffield. I previously owned a 1.4 VW polo 6n which I did the usual slammed on deep dish wheels. Before that I had an '89 Mini which was slammed on some 13x7 ultralites with an endless list of mods. I am also into my push bikes, mainly skatepark riding/street/dirtjumps/4x/anything I can jump

Anyway, excuse the phone pics/screen shots of it.

After a couple of days, and the novelty of turbos, the standard recirc valve broke and was making a fluttering noise when I let off the throttle, so I replaced it with a new one which has sorted this problem out (Part no: 06A145710N) although pictured valve below is the old one after I fitted the new one. I found this to be a 10 minute job after getting my stuff out and packing away.

I have also got a clunking when setting off and sometimes over continuous small bumps at lower speeds, not when i go over big bumps as such. I'm thinking that this could be the dogbone mount? I didnt get time to check this today so first thing tomorrow Im going to properly inspect.
Thanks, Adrian.

aye, still owe you one! thanks for the hand the other day, driving mint now done 200 miles in the week haha!

Cheers guys, seems as though my hardest decision is picking wheels atm! Im not wanting to lower it a great deal, seems like a shame to drop it into the floor and ruin the bottom on such a nice car. Im thinking about just closing the arch gap up a little bit, say 30mm or so.. if that. with that in mind ive decided to go with a set of 17's ( i think ) with a tyre size like a 225/45/17, does that sound about right?

also fixed a mysterious clunking noise which was baffling me, had dogbone mount off and that was fine, gave everything a general tighten and shake bla bla and found that the mount on the exhaust had snapped on the welds. one quick jubilee clip later and its sorted for now. It is the backbox one and isnt going anywhere, but planning on getting some kind of subtle stainless exhaust at some point so not phased.

bought some audi TT comp wheels today (will get pics) with basically brand new 225/40/17 ( tyres will probably be for sale soon).. however I want some 215/45/17 just to make the rolling diameter basically the same as my standard 205/55/16.
The wheels have a little bit of rashing on them so i'm going to get them basically mint (or close as possible) over the winter.
when nice season comes i'll hopefully get myself a set of weitec coilovers and then get myself to r-tech for some kind of power increase.
I'll also be looking at some kind of stainless exhaust system, I dont want anything loud at all, infact as quiet as possible really but just to make it a little more raspy that standard. what are people running?
Thanks, Adrian.

sorry to rip this out of the forum but i have just seen this image of your car in a thread about lowering springs ( http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=232933.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=232933.0) ) and was wondering how low this was and how you lowered it at this point? Basically i'm not wanting to go as low as I have in the past because I dont want to ruin the bottom of this car.
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: golfyste on 11 November 2013, 08:41
You want 225/45 not 215 dude
As for exhaust the resonated miltek would be the one to go for it's just it's a little expensive  :undecided:
Jetex are also known as a decent "quiet" zaust

Wheels look good you running them through the winter or sticking standard for now?
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: caravanking on 13 November 2013, 09:48
I was going to get an 8" wide rim but now realise it's 215 for 7.5, cheers dude! As for running them, I don't really intend in putting them on until I've sorted a little bit of low. I can get some Spax psx adjustable dampers and springs from work for 300 and don't want to go coilovers because I don't really want to go 'low', just close the arch gap a little.

had these about a week now but thought i would just share them with you, they were a bit curbed and were suffering a little lacquer peel when i got them, after a good session on one, its nearly done.. just needs a little more attention to get it perfect. Not been doing a great deal but got a k&n panel filter off my brother so fitted that today. Getting it all ready for a remap. Next is milltek cat back. Where's best place to get one from?
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: golfyste on 25 December 2013, 17:47
Make sure you get a stainless downpipe as well dude.
Standard downpipe is the most restrictive part of the exhaust!
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: caravanking on 31 December 2013, 00:37
My brother told me to consider getting a down pipe, will it work with standard cat too?

Another note, after weighing up my options for quite a while now, I've finally bit the bullet and ordered some Spax PSX springs and dampers. Christmas came early would be the wrong phrase I suppose.. I know this is where I might be getting questioned as to why I didn't just buy some cheapo coilovers? Haha!

I've been down the slammed car route before and if I got coilovers I'd just end up slamming this car and ruining the bottom of it. Said to myself that 40mm and good handling is what I was aiming for so decided to go for the Spax kit as my brother had it on his mk2 golf for 4 years and is still running it now.

So next plans?
Get tyres on 17's for good season and finish polishing the new wheels.
Miltek exhaust and possibly a down pipe too.
Turbo intake pipe.
Remap.

Only just checked back in on this, in the pic above I was on coils, down about 50-60mm I think.

I found that dubmeister was the cheapest place for millteks when I bought mine. EBay downpours are fine, I'm running a 3" one with decat but they also come with sports cats which should get you through an mot.
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: golfyste on 31 December 2013, 12:16
Look forward to seeing it lowered dude
I would defiantly make sure you get a downpipe! it will make more of a difference then having a cat back as the downpipe is the most restrictive part!

Today I fitted a new coolant temperature sensor (the green one to replace black) and also topped up power steering fluid because it was dry basically. Both simple things have made a noticeable difference.

Makes me more excited to fit my Spax stuff tomorrow. Gone for 35mm springs and the psx adjustable dampers.

I'm also cracking on with refurbing my audi wheels pretty well.

Some point in the week I'll be putting some pennies towards a milltek exhaust and 4motion rear valance, fitting that on the next dry day after getting it.

Last job, before end of the month is a remap.

Good work mate, i've just done temp sensor on mine and now i'm onto thermostat change as I keep seeing my temp drop from 90 so keep an eye out for that. Which end of Sheff you at?

Hi mate, in around hackenthorpe/birley/beighton area. Assuming you're from around here too?

Today's work consisted of putting my new Spax suspension on. Unfortunately, because of it raining and a buyer coming for some wheels that I had on my old car, I didn't get finished and only managed to get the fronts done. Looks like it's a decent amount lower! Will be cracking on with the rears tomorrow and getting it tracked. Early start it is.

Will post pics up of before and afters when there is something to take a picture of.

Also got busy last night and got some of the centre caps for my audi wheels smooth and free of lacquer peel. Got to say I love having a long break off uni.

Thanks, adrian.

It must be other side of Sheffield that then as i'm not familiar with them bits, i'm in Barnsley so nearer Chapletown, Greenoside etc and my missus lived in Sheff whilst at uni.

Yeah I rode them woods quite a bit at greno on push bike. Complete other side of Sheffield though. You go to any of the lowdownvw meets it retro rides?

Successfully finished lowering the car today. Took me no time at all at a steady pace to do the rears.

The Spax psx dampers and 35mm springs have completely changed how the car drives, sort of reminds me of driving my polo.. Just way better. Properly fallen in love with my golf now.

The ride is firmer, even bough I have set the dampers to their softest setting. This possibly could bed in and get softer? Will keep you all updated. As for the amount of drop, I'm satisfied. Just as a gauge, I can get two fingers in the arch gap with standard size gti wheels and tyres. The arch gap is even front and back which is what I was concerned about when buying springs and dampers. I know his will probably settle a little more, but again, will keep you updated.

Will get before and after pics ASAP.
Thanks, Adrian.

Picked up some milltek stuff today.. Whups :S in need of a 4mo valance at some point.

Also need to get them before and after shots of the car since lowering. I can however say that the suspension feels as though it's getting softer, as it started out a little firm.

Next stop, remap.

Need to see it again now it's lowered!
Pick up a 4mo valance easy enough!
Keep it up

really struggling with the remote central locking. I need to synchronise the key, basically the buttons don't do anything although they light up the red light. I have replaced the batteries on both keys but still nothing. I have also tried many different methods after reading endless tutorials and the actual owners manual to try and sync the keys with no joy. Has anybody actually done this themselves and could help me out?

Finally got my milltek all fitted up and been driving it, the resonated version is really quiet low down in the revs.. Almost like standard, but at higher revs it sounds a little gruntier and makes some brutal turbo noise :P however I found that I needed to cut a section out of the body to make the exhaust clear because it was touching at the tip of the tail pipe.

The 4mo Valance was a wrestling match to get on too.. Will get pics of the car ASAP.

Finally got pics but they're off my phone so sorry about that. I have lowered the car on spas pax adjustable dampers and 35mm springs. this is after about a week or so and have covered 150 miles since fitting. they are really smooth at the softest setting.. this does seem to have got softer as if they have bedded in or something! awesome!

It sits even front and back which I was concerned about, even better. handling is unreal compared to standard shocks and springs and massively recommend this kit for anyone that wants to use this method of lowering.

On fitting my Milltek exhaust, I ran into what I thought was a problem. The exhaust was touching the body like it is below. I thought that the exhaust was sitting in correctly as i had not been informed that the exhaust would touch like this, because everywhere I read it said the exhaust was a direct fit onto standard mounts and came with everything to fit it.. as it did.

It was when I bought my 4 motion valance and held it up that I realised that i would simply have to cut a section out of the car. The brown shaded section below. I touched over with underseal after to prevent rust.

Very trivial I know, but I couldn't find any information about this anywhere about it touching (maybe I'm blind) and just want to throw in my bit to stop anyone getting into a flap like I did haha!

The exhaust is a milltek resonated GT80, its actually free'd it up a little bit and its less hesitant. seems to make a fair bit of boost noise now and makes a nice bit of burbling, but at the same time is nice and quiet low down and easy to live with.

Tomorrow will see a phone call to R-tech.

Thanks Adrian.

That's interesting, I had the same issue when fitting my Milltek but put it down to the car having been rear ended in the past. I cut a slit into the section that was touching and bent it back under on itself.

Post by: caravanking on 14 January 2014, 22:45
Probably something that has to be done. The towing eye is in a different place on the 4motion also, so perhaps it is different.. the tail pipe is quite a lot bigger though.

I need to adjust mine anyway, its sticking out too much haha, not daft amounts but i want it set back in further about an inch.. only a case of sliding pipe on some more really.

That valance bracket has to be bent out of the way with any twin exit system and a 4mo valance on the Golf so don't panic
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: caravanking on 16 January 2014, 20:32
All sorted now and been driving round for a couple of days now, just want to get the exhaust tip further into the valance.. Sticks out too much for my liking haha!

Im also getting it mapped on Thursday. I just a have a question. I was told that I need to fill it up with v-power for when I go down. Fair enough, I understand the reason for higher Ron fuel and pre igniting etc. but it's out of my way to get to the nearest v-power garage. After the map, is it good to run it on just normal premium super e.g normal 98RON if I really need to?

I know it's a silly trivial question, just curious.
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: Carl! on 18 January 2014, 16:04
where you off for the remap? interesting that, id have thought that if you are intending to run it on normal ron  then it would be better mapped with this in mind?
Title: Re: Adrian's mk4 golf 1.8t
Post by: dom on 18 January 2014, 16:41
If the car is mapped to run on high octane fuel then you'll need to run it all the time on high octane. Also run at least a couple of tanks of it through prior to the remap.

Post by: brewey on 19 January 2014, 10:54
Have you got a tesco near you? I find my car rubs better on the momentum than vpower anyway. Plus it's cheaper.

I also had to bend that bracket out of the way on my milltek.

Getting it mapped at rtech on Thursday. Found a vpower garage about 2 miles from my house so no biggie really. I've ran about 100 miles since filling up and about a third of a tank. Ran my car way past the "bong".. Must have had about 15 miles of fuel left when I filled up to he brim with vpower. Going to fill it to the top before I set off down to have it mapped too, was just a ballache that I filled up just before I booked in for the map haha!

still no map.. was my own fault for this however. had to cancel my place.

However, I recently found out what a particular rattle was that seemed to come from the back of the engine.

I realised that the rattle kind of noise only occurs when the secondary air pump is running. I researched what the system consists of a couple of days ago and after chasing pipes around, the furthest back component linked to the secondary air pump is the vacuum valve that is held on with two bolts that would get blanked off if I removed the secondary air pump system. low and behold, when I started the car and listened to this component, the rattling seemed to come from here. Therefore I'm 99.9% sure that it is this at fault. looked into replacing it but they're over £100 new.

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=112034 (http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=112034)

Found the above link so I will be removing the system for the sake of saving money.. not to mention that removing the secondary air pump seems to be a common mod.

Will post back here once done to confirm that it was this part at fault when I can.

I've been slack with this to say the least. Done a few bits to this since the last post.
Taken sump off, cleaned the grime out if the sump and replaced the oil pickup and o-ring.
Serviced it, new plugs, oil, oil filter and fuel filter.
Refurbed my Audi comp wheels and have them a good polish, got tyres fitted and got them on the car.
I bought a milltek downpipe for it that's going on it Wednesday, also got a combi valve blank and need to remove the sai system.
Will get some pics when I can either figure it out on my phone or when my computer is on
