I was looking into getting one, then i realised there's one for the android phones. Anyone used it? Just being paranoid after almost crashing into someone because they slammed their brakes on.

Good find there. Even though I have a dashcam already, I will give this one a go too as I drive other vehicles for work on a regular basis and I never get the chance to move the dashcam to them.
The only drawback in my own car is that I listen to pod casts, sometimes I use it as a secondary satnav (google earth is great for finding places!) and occasionally I make and receive calls on it. So previously putting a dash cam app on there before used to result in a lot of phone crashes.

The problem with phone ones is the burden of turning it on all the time. The time you'l need it you'll probably have your phone in your pocket!

I run Blackview 400s both front and rear. They offer full GPS positioning and timing (which can be important in a crash) and record on a rolling 1-3 min loop. Full HD recording gives very good videos and the GPS function also integrates into Google Maps so you replay your routes.
No cheap but one of the best.

With people who have these, I presume they plug into the 12v adaptor.
Can you hide the cable quite well i.e. run the wire round the frame of the windscreen and tuck it behind everything?
I know they will all be different, put I presume most of them turn on automatically when they get power (e.g. when the engine turns on?).
Looking at just getting a cheapo one for now off amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/VISION-IN-CAR-ACCIDENT-CAMERA-Recorder/dp/B0085ZD17G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384712218&sr=8-1&keywords=dvr+car+camera
People either rave on about it and give it 5 starts, or they give it a 1 star and rate it poorly. BUt for £18 I guess it's worth a try.
If only the actual camera at the front of the car did something similar.

Just ordered the Mini 0801 camera as it was reduced on Amazon down to £59.98.
I went for the one without GPS as I don't really want my speed showing on the videos so there isn't much benefit for me there. Also no need for internal memory and picked up a decent class 6 32GB card elsewhere on Amazon.

Just need a car now

I have posted this in the How To section

Once fitted I easily ran the cable from my Dashcam along the top and down the side of the windscreen and and along the top of the dash to the side entry at the right side of the dash. My Speed camera alert unit sits on top of the dash and here I just ran the cable along the windscreen to the drivers side and again along the side of the screen into the side entry
Did not have to remove any trim just pushed the cables as far into the gaps as I could with a comb - other plastic items are available

Cheers mate.... I am just worried about damaging trimming or wiring it up wrong :undecided:
I am going to look into how to extend the MDI cable into the centre armrest on the weekend.... so I can use MDI & Adv Phone Kit

Looking good there. I ended up getting one of these 801's. The smartwitness unit will be put in the rear windscreen.
Nice to have cameras on our side for once :)

Yeah gonna get one for the rear in the new year, with the radar assisted braking people are more likely to crash into us from behind!

I wish I had this in my works vehicle few days ago, bloke in a transit van pulled onto an empty round about at 6.30am as I pull away to follow he slammed the brakes on... a 7.5 ton lorry loaded to the max down hill in the wet doesn't stop quickly and hit him.
If I had a cam I could have proven he slammed the brakes on hard for no reason after pulling away

Resurrected this thread rather than start a new one.
Anyone purchased a "premium" dashcam 2 channel combo recently?
There are a few contenders out there, but they all seem to have their foibles (focussing, getting warm and switching off, can't cope with bitrate when taking "busy" footage (lots of trees etc in the footage).
Basically looking for something with usable night time footage, front and back cameras, park protect function (fine for complete coverage overnight stretches of parking).
Blackvue 650 is looking favourite.
