Title: How to read the average fuel consumption
Post by: Saha on 01 November 2013, 16:36
Hello
Please can anybody tell me how to use the mfd display through the multi function steering wheel to read the average fuel cons.
Thanks

Using the buttons on the right hand side of the steering wheel, press the silver button left or right until you see "Driving Data", leave it for a second so it displays, then use the up-down arrow to go through the different info options until you see "AvgConsumption", then press ok to toggle through the options, either "long term" "from start" etc.

Hope that helps? :)

Thanks for the post!

You might be better off not knowing, looked at mine today, 28mpg

Talking of which. What the hell is all this talk about 44-47mpg!? I'm driving mine gently and getting mid-high 20's at best.

The car drinks fuel. I put in a full tank last week and it's empty again already after just 240 miles :O

There's some of us with GTDs not getting that, me included!

Just picked up my GTD today and it's been averaging 47-48 mpg, so very happy with that so far after 140 miles on the clock

I thought the figures were too good to be true. There's a guy that's covered over 4000 miles and is still averaging 28mpg. Quite irritating really, they shouldn't beable to advertise those figures at all.

What are others getting from a full tank?

Mpg depends on so many variable. It will be around 15-20k miles before you'll notice big improvements as a guess.
Don't expect anything over 40mpg unless you do a lot of motorway miles.

I'd be happy with seeing more near the 35 mark and that's still 10mpg below the stated figures.

Which is a joke considering VW have said the mk7 is much improved over the mk6 which it obviously isn't!   >:(

Had mine a couple of days, showing 60 miles on the clock & I'm getting 30mpg. Going up everytime I drive it. I will be taking it out today for a blast.... Suspect that it will be less than 30 by the end of the day

Mine has around 2500 miles on it now. I can easily achieve around 43mpg on a run. The average since i picked up the car is around 34mpg i think.

I would say my driving style is fairly normal, however i am not afraid to give it some for a good hour sometimes, then it drops to low 20's. It's fun though and at the end of day its a GTI so i'm not so fussed, i didn't buy this car for good fuel economy!

In reality a GTI  is not for fuel economy.  However that doesn't mean we don't all want fuel to last longer.

You have to be sensible and realistic though, I drive mainly motorway miles and do the same journey each week.  In my mk5 I could easily get 36 mpg on cruise control on the way to my destination but struggle to get 33 mpg cruising at the same speed back home.

There are so many variables you just have to be happy with what you get.  The thrill you get from acceleration in any car is paid for at the pumps.

How the hell are you getting those figures? I can't get anywhere near that, maybe if I laboured the engine in every gear.

No your right, you don't buy the GTI for economy but when you're told it's 20% more efficient than the Mk6 and has a combined cycle of mid 40's mpg you don't expect to see half of that on your MFD :P

Yes acceleration is paid at the pumps. But I don't see how half throttle and a max of 4k rpm every now & again is pushing the engine to drink fuel. How many miles is everyone getting out a tank?

I'm not sure Savage. I don't use climate control or AC, at least not at the moment anyway. I also don't like using cruise control as i believe it uses more fuel than just using the good old fashioned throttle pedal.

At the end of the day i am not making a conscious decision to save as much fuel as possible, i just drive it how i want to. For example, the other week i used an entire tank in under 300 miles - i was having a lot of fun though!

Are you using manual or DSG? I'm DSG so I guess that explains some loss of fuel economy. Drive labours the engine at times and sport happily goes to red line at any throttle. So I'm having to use the paddle shifters to keep the revs between 2-4k. I'm not kicking down the throttle or driving at full beans. Climate control is on all the time but no AC.

The best figure I saw was 33mpg on a long gentle drive.

I'm in a manual Savage. That may explain some of it.
