Hi,
A horrible rattling noise has just started coming from underneath my 2000 gti golfr-It seems to have started from the other night when I was waiting on a mate for an hour and had the heater on at full blast for a period of time.
This evening when I started the car, whilst it started there was a noticable lack of start up power. The rattling is quite bad.
The temperature is still perfect thou.
I am going to have a better look tomorrow to see if its just a bracket or something but dont think it is.
Any ideas of what to look for?
-
Loose heatshield?
-
Cheers Dom, I'll have a look for that tomorrow. Just had another listen and its definately concentrated at the front end.
Just hoping its not a flywheel issue or something (although the clutch isnt vibrating etc so pretty sure its not that)
-
I had the same, it was the heatshield that covers the CAT there will be two bolts missing, i'll put money on that
-
Cheers Guys, I'll look tomorrow and report back. Thanks for your advice

Had a better look today and unfortunately it wasnt just the heatshield.
The rattling is coming from the exhaust and specifically from inside the CAT.
Any one got any ideas if there's any cheaper way to fit this as opposed to a new exhaust?
From looking at it the previous owner must have had an issue as there is a load of fire resistant foam around the CAT box.
-
At this point id suspect the cat has blown and blown out the baffles in the backbox.
-
Guys,
I can confirm that it is the CAT that is gone.
Do you happen to know in relation to the emmissions test for the MOT would it be more likely to pass or fail if I simply either cut out the CAT and fitted some piping or just ran a straight exhaust instead.
Cheers

entirely dependant.
my old car had no cat and actually got better emissions than some cars that were only 4 years old
however know a few people who have struggled to get through an MOT emmissions test with a sports cat.
-
Cheers, Might just take it out in meantime as MOT isnt until March and if it needs it then i'll put one on.
Thanks
