3 years minimum  hopefully.... I opted for 4 years warranty and PCP over 3 years. Anybody how long GTi generations get updated?
Every for years?

3 years for me probably and then either 235i or new TT

5 Years - Planning on an AMG Merc next, probably the new C63 (here is hoping!).

The money I'd be losing if selling after 3 years is too scary to think about, but spread of 5 is a little more bearable. :-)

Good point, forget the 3 years bit, I'll wait until the next facelift comes out for the vag models

I wonder how the residuals will hold up with all the excellent press reviews. I was one of the first to order a Scirocco back in 2008 and managed to only lose 3k from my invoice price after 2.5 years of driving. If the GTI holds it value well I would certainly consider moving it on sooner rather than later..

With the amount of mileage I shall be doing my residuals will be pretty poor  :nerd: approx 20k pa
To be fair I have a 2nd Golf too which is my weekend car, so could sell both in the future perhaps... I'm going to just get my GTi and enjoy it as long as possible.

Don't think you would be to worried about depreciation if you can afford a C63

5 years plus for me.

I tend to run cars into the ground, had current car 6 years and it was 2 years old when I got it.

And besides, I need to plenty of timr to save and ponder over the midlife crisis car ;)

Probably 3 years for my GTD, maybe 4 if nothing on the market tempts me in the meantime. If I can get the missus driving in something practical (she wants an Audi A1 when i'm made redundant and she either has to bus it to work or learn to drive - I currently drop her off on the way to my work and our hours are compatible to share a lift) then I culd be tempted by a next gen (MQB platform) Audi TT MK3 or VW Scirocco MK4 if they come out looking at least as good as current gen and the Scirocco is as well equipped as the GTD.

Did well off my first Scirocco but that was partially due to the used price being artificially buoyed by buying it when VAT was 15% and selling when VAT was 20% (so used prices actually went up). Bought a £23k Scirocco 140TDI GT for £20,500 and p/xed it 2 years later for the 170TDI GT for £17k. The 170TDI didn't hold up quite as well, but still impressive to hold 67% of what I paid for it on 27 months old.

4 years... unless it turns out to be a dud

Got the 4 yr warranty this time so all should be cool.

Well my average for keeping a car is a year! I am seriously hoping the gti will tick all my boxes and i can keep it 3 to 4 years. Its quickish, looks great and is practical. I planned to keep my JCW for 5 years.... it lasted 18 months!

Probably 3 years for me if all goes well between now and then, kept my last car, Civic Type R GT for 4 years but timing could be right for Golf R after 3 years this time.

6-7 years normally.

Got my astra as an ex demo in September 2006 and sold it a few weeks ago in preperation for the golf coming, so that's been 7 years and a bit.

Well, my MK5 Golf I kept for just over 5 years, and when I got the Scirocco, I swore I'd keep it as long, but in the end only kept it for just under 3 years (although I did love it).

So for the GTD (and I really love this), I'll say 5 years, but most likely will be 3 , but then our Mortgage is due to be paid off in the next year, so who know.....

3 years, then like Craig I'll consider the new TT, the 235i/135i but also the R or a maybe a 4 series.

Always plan for 3 years but always ends up being 2

That is usually me to a tee! There is always something better around the corner. This might be the first time that VW 2.0TDI tech stagnates for a good few years after a noticeable but not revolutionary power increase - unless they finally get around to bringing a twin scroll turbo out.

You usually find with VAGs that between years 2  and 3, the monthly cost and monthly depreciation are almost equal.

I got a 2.0 TDI 140PD MK5 Golf on a 55 plate, kept it 2 years and then:-

I got a 2.0 TDI 170PD MK5 Golf on a 57 plate after my dad got one on 07 plate and it was massively better on performance. Once a bus clattered that at 2 weeks old and it took me another 7 weeks to get it back, it was never the same. It had a sh!te repair by Benfield and went back for lots of remedial work. The car was tainted and I resented it until…

The Scirocco 140CR GT came out and I got one on 09 plate. 2 months after I got it, the 170CR was announced and I wanted it.

Waited 2 years to get one on 11 plate because I’d have lost too much p/x-ing before that.

Scirocco 170CR was just under 2 years old when I ordered my GTD, knowing that the car would be 2 years old when I got my GTD.

A new gen Audi TT is the most likely cause of temptation coming out in the foreseeable.

I'm the odd one out here I think - probably 10 years

I've had my current car for 10 years and I'm really going to enjoy the step-change. I'm looking forward to getting attached to the next one too!

10 Years – long time! Do you get better warranties over there like Yanks getting 8 year powertrain warranties etc? Looks like you’ve timed the jump right – lots of new tech on the MK7 that I can’t see getting hugely surpassed in at least the next 5 years, maybe longer – as well as a new Chassis design that VAG will retain for a very long time.

I can imagine the MK8 not improving much over the MK7 like the MK6 didn’t improve much on the MK5. The MK7 is arguably the biggest single evolutionary step of the Golf, the DSG is only a small step away from being capable of driving itself.

I had my last Passat for 8 years, so I'm more than happy keeping a car to get my full monies worth out of it.

When I get my ED40, I intend to keep that for ever. It's not as if it's going to get driven that much.

Nothing like that I'm afraid, though some cars like the R are detuned for our climate to give them a better chance of lasting. There are probably a few reasons for keeping it for a while; leasing seems less common (cultural?) and I need to pull my head in and buy a place next (I'm 28).

Mostly though, I'm probably not on the same level of car obsession as the rest of you - yet. This is only the second car forum I've looked at with the other being the Australian equivalent where we mostly whinge about not getting the same options as you guys. Maybe this place will be the gateway drug that changes it all when I become envious at you all driving around in Mk8s.

I can unserstand the 10 year thing but 2 or 3 years just goes so quickly for me.
I have friends that change regular every year or 2 and ive never understood it as they basically just forking out £250+ a month for ever or in their case the past 20+ years for  what basically in reality is just renting a car and they never really actually own one. Thats lot of money over the years.

I would love to be able to stay in a GTI for 10 years, but I think the mileage I do will cut that short in my case.

I don't feel like i've bought a car ever when I change every 3 years - for a car that comes with high residuals, losing £3k a year over 3 years, fully under warranty with everything new isn't that bad compared to losing £2200 a year over 10 years (£26k car realistically worth £4k after 10 years) and having to pay out for tyres/brakes/clutch and the risk of something big failing beyond warranty. An extra £800 a year for the reassurance of warranty and saving on the aforementioned consumables doesn't seem a bad deal to me. Cars are only getting better too with more tech etc.

One or two years is too short, but keeping a car for 10 years is too extreme, that means your only going to drive 5 cars before your starting to question if your well enough to drive? Seems a bit depressing to me

It's everyone's personal preference. For example we have two vehicles, wife's car used to be a Mini Cooper S and I had to conclusory diesel. Now gone full circle, I have (or will soon have) the GTi and she has a Countryman Diesel All4.

If you drive 20k+ miles a year, you probably will swap every 2-3 years. 10 years does seem like a long time, but it's each to their own. I personally don't want to be paying £300 P/M for the next 25 years and always be 20k in the red. Rather get to the a point where the car is 'paid' and I can put money towards other things until the time comes to change again. Which for me will probably be in 5 years or so.

Going to Order an R asap , and sell the GTI mid next year ,good spec Low miles , don't get me wrong the GTI is superb ,
I do miss the extra bit of BHP , but most of all the traction especially this time of year ,the chassis and steering on the
Mk7 are a big plus , In fact the GTI is exceptional ,and the Smile Factor Off the Chart !!!! so the new R will do it all for
me

Would you sell privately to get a better rate than part-ex'ing?

Title: Re: How long do you plan to keep your GTI?

Would you sell privately to get a better rate than part-ex'ing?

If I could I would, but you’ll find very few people wanting to drop £15-17k on a private buy and having to arrange their own finance etc. Maybe forums like here and Pistonheads might be where you’re most likely to get a private buyer.

If you get a decent part-ex price then  you’re no better off than selling privately. If there’s £3k margin (£15k part ex to £18k on the dealership forecourt), no-one is going to pay you within £2k of the dealership used sticker  price, they may not even pay you within £3k of it.

Buying somewhere at maximum discount like a broker might mean getting a poor part-ex offer, that’s where selling privately might make sense, but you could be potentially carless for weeks more than you anticipate if you sell a few weeks before anticipated delivery and VW (or any other marque) pulls a delay on you.

the e/o you make from selling the car privately isnt worth the hassle or time you put into it imo, id gladly lose a grand just to take it to a dealer and have them swap me for a new model.

Allowed 1 vehicle per yr for myself or  close family relatives

Would you sell privately to get a better rate than part-ex'ing?

I will sell privately ,can't see ,and never had any problem , usually do a back up ,and arrange for
the Dealer to list it after a private period of sale , and if anyone wants Finance ,the dealer will do
it (not happened yet ) .
The secret of selling privately is to have an In demand product ,with a good spec ,well presented,
and pictured in a nice location ,with low miles ,and plenty of warranty left , so if it's priced right ,
a little behind dealer level for the same spec ,and you get a good discount on the new car ,on cars
of this level you can be thousands better off , It works for me ,yes it can get messy with Idiots ,
but the higher the level of car the less you get .
If you do the same as everyone else ,sell at 2-3years with average miles and spec ,you are up
against a whole pile of competition from other private sellers and dealer P/Ex's all traded at the
same time of year .
