Title: VWR vs Carbonio cold air intake for the 2.0 TSI ??
Post by: candywhite12 on 27 October 2013, 19:27
guys i'm at a loss here.  Been researching this for the entire week and haven't reached a conclusion.  My car has no MODs whatsoever so i thought this is a nice way to start.  Cost between the 2 differs substantially -- 262 (APR) vs 345 (VWR).  Why such a difference?  Which is the best? I do not intend to remap the car any time soon.  car as seen in my description.

thanks

I had the Carbonio fitted for about 2 years, good bit of kit but no benefit unless you fit an exhaust IMO

if you are not remapping your car i'd save your hard earned and stick with the stock air box

Yes, bit of a waste of cash unless you have a see through bonnet...

Yes, bit of a waste of cash unless you have a see through bonnet...

Quoting from the VWR website, "The race bred nature of the intake system is noticeable instantly upon acceleration, giving a rich induction roar under acceleration....you will certainly hear the turbocharger compressing massive amounts of air as the engine is able to breathe freely for the first time. Releasing the throttle under boost will result in a classic turbocharger woosh" ...

Is this accurate?  I'd pay my hard earned for that woosh and roar as I find the factory intake to be too much of a pussy noise-wise.

Dont believe the hype mate, if your not getting a remap you might as well through the money down the drain, you will lose low end torque and BHP.

Spend the money on a nice sounding exhaust.

The intake is noisier than the milltek exhaust I had

It does make all the whooshing and whistling noises but it did my head in so I sold it.

Without a remap it wasn't too loud but with the map on it sounded rediculous IMO.

Was it a noticeable difference in sound without the remap mate?  And which CAI did you have?

thanks

there was a noticeable difference in sound between mapped and standard with the intake fitted yes.

i had the maxogen/VWR intake and it was horrific.

the car did pull better especially higher up the rev range but the noise was laughable

yeah the whistle is totally normal on the TSI - some people hate, doesnt really bother me, i know my turbo is just work hard for me.

I have treid a few intakes, Neuspeed does it, Evoms (which im running now) does it, didnt hear with the carbonio (but hesitated in power).

all depends what you want. Like MKViken said, he doesnt like the roar / dump which i totally get. where as me, i love the roar, dumps, whistles and pops.....

intakes are massively subjective, i know a few who did not get on with the ITG/VWR i actually loved it as was not to noisy and rant for 30,000 miles, open ones are noisier still

VWR, Revo and Evoms are the only ones i'd touch, i see Forge now have an open intake given the Twin Take doesn't work on the Mk6

Yeah as Wigit said, dont look at at Forge TwinTake or Wintake, they are prone for losing all kindz of BHP and giving massive hesitation

no what i meant was, was there a noticeable difference between standard with intake and standard without intake?  This is what interests me mostly since i do not intend to map the car for now at least

depending on what intake. open intake without map = medium, with remap equally medium to loud.

Having researched the thing extensively and read all the opinions here i'm inclining toward the carbonio, the VWR one is way too expensive in comparison

I went carbonio as well after much research. VWR as you say isn't worth it. I'd also recommend just waiting for a second hand one. They do come up every few month for a nice saving.

I got mine for £200 for stage 1 & 2!
