Hey guys. I've recently bought a 2002 MKIV GTI and I'm having some trouble with the locks.
I've read all the guides but my symptoms seem different to the usual ones quoted. I thought the later cars were supposed to have the 'improved' lock modules? Not sure what the improvements were as 3 of mine don't work!
Drivers door: Very rarely unlocks from the remote. Always locks from the remote. Always unlocks and locks from the button in the car. Can be unlocked from the outside with the key but the mechanism feels really rough and there's a fair bit of resistance as you turn the key.
Front Passenger door: Very rarely unlocks with the remote or the button in the car. Doesn't have a key hole! If it's locked and you pull the handle inside the car it feels pretty rough, with a lot of resistance and the button doesn't pop up, nor does the door unlock.
Rear passenger side door: Locks and unlocks fine. But when you pull the handle to open the door, it catches with the door open about an inch. You then have to pull on the handle a few times to get it open.
I don't seem to have any of the symptoms quoted when people have trouble with the old style lock modules. Puddle lights not working, interior lights not coming on, unusual central locking or alarm behaviour. My locks would seem to be mechanically F*&ked. Rather than having the dry joint/micro switch issues??
Do I just need to change 3 lock modules!
Are the ones off eBay any good? I can't afford to give VW £400 to fix my doors!
Any advice or tips please guys? Thank you.

My money would be on the convenience module (CCM) opposed to the door modules.

Having similar issues dude, but mine will unlock the car but wont lock it !!! I'll let you no if have and joy with fixing it

Hi Dom, thanks! I'll get the CCM looked at and any codes read. That would certainly be cheaper/easier than changing 3 door locks. :)
Hi Matty, cheers dude! I'm probably going to get a VW specialist/Bosch centre to have a look at it in the week and hopefully give me a diagnosis. I'll let you know how I get on. :)

With you rear one I had the same with a second hand one I got for my front drivers struggled to release the catch , ended up sending it back and got another one, no faults as yet , and it was new style too ,!
