sounds like your top mounts are shot, can get replacement ones with bearings from gsf for 10-15 notes a side. if your after oem ones that are better quality, the the mk2 g60 ones. or the next step is poly bush ones, little bit more expensive but 10x better than oem ones, just whatever you do, get bearings aswell

I know what you mean,

do you mean uprated ones like these? its what I run. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK3-92-98-Powerflex-Front-Strut-Top-Mounts-PFF85-239-/370917254822?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item565c6426a6

topmount bearings are http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-1-4-1-6-1-8-1-9-2-0-2-3-2-8-2-9-Suspension-Strut-Top-Mount-Ball-Bearing-/400505529658?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+III&hash=item5d3ffd653a    but make sure you order the correct ammount, ie 2. there sold individually

and top mount nuts to be safe   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK3-VR6-CORRADO-CADDY-VAN-SHOCK-TOP-MOUNT-BEARING-NUTS-1H0412365A-C913-/221268691399?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+III&hash=item3384a449c7

I've been running Febi top mounts on all four shocks since I fitted them over two years ago, no issues to report.
