Post by: vwwvgolf on 23 October 2013, 14:57
im thinking of putting my longbeachs back on for the winter as the bbs are a pain to keep clean.

I have a set of these for winter http://avon-tyres.co.uk/car/cr85 (http://avon-tyres.co.uk/car/cr85)

£200 for the set in 195/50x15 size, can't say how good they are as there not fitted as yet but reading various reviews they seem quite highly regarded

Nokian WR D3 are decent and fairly well priced (4 for 200£) or if you wanna go full on snow crazy Nokian Hakkapeliitta R (they are superb but £££).

it seems most winter tyres are listed as mud and snow.

I guess it's due to the grooves they work in both??

all (proper) winter tyres are marked M+S as this is the legal requirement for countries where they are obligatory.
good tyres that don't just bear the m+s mark for legal reasons (i.e. so you can drive your car all year round if legally winter tyres are called for) also have a snow flake symbol on them.

the 'm' can be interpreted as mud, but it's more snowy mud that really thick stuff you, e.g. find in a field.

yeh i wasnt planning on driving though any fields or anything haha, more just the build up of mud and leaves on the sides of the narrow county roads

Proper winter tyres are studded. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. However the roads aren't as durable as they used to be so most countries don't allow studded tyres anymore  but the ones with real winters allow it.  I think snow chains are legal still in the UK?

I'm from Canada and I can tell you that I have not seen a "real winter" in Southern England over the time I have been living here (the last seven years). It  may be different in the North

I am willing to bet that London and train service (never heard of diesel locomotives)  will not be "prepared" for the winter this year. But on the positive side at least the cars don't rot away from salt in this country as they don't seem to use it much. Plus everyone gets the snow days off in this country.

Very true (I'm Austrian and lived in Finland for a few years before moving to the UK).

Downside is with them you're only allowed to drive max 60mph... not that it matters in Nordics. Limits are lowered to 100kph (60mph) on motorways and 80kph (50mph) on A roads during winter.

I miss real winter (and people that can handle it and media and police not telling you to stay home because of 1 cm of snow).

Just put 2 on the front of my van. Dry grip is crap  still pretty poor on wet road compared to my old tyres. Today I was driving through torrential ran and I saw an improvement compared to my old tyres. It does say on them that they operate under 6° so pros and cons. Just have to wait. But im sure ill be driving past many stuck drivers in the snow still earning a living

only got them because we are meant to have bad snow this year and last year I got stuck coming home from work.

what have you got on the back wheels then? summer or winter tyres.

you'll regret only fitting winter to the front - you will have grip accelerating but very little lateral grip, so corners won't be your friend (as much fun as it is sliding through them).

its a van not a golf bud. Certainly wont be driving fast enough for the arse end to swing out and if it does ill power out of it

only fitted rear winters to my bmw 528i couple years back too and that was fine. Didnt understeer at all.

Its not good practice or advisable but im more than happy with only having winter on the drive wheels.

In the London area you dont need much more than Rain tyres just take care.
Banjo country might be different but I don't live there lol
Last year I was working up the top of Norway and it was harsh, one of the guys has a merc with top notch winters on it with good grip but it's really down to how the population drive in respect to the roads and people around them.  I spend a lot of time in snowy parts and have to say the Scandinavians are the best at handling the winters in my experience.

The Nordics just don't really clear their roads, you just drive sensibly (fair enough snow grips again in -20) or if you have an Audi A4 (B7) 2.0 quattro with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 (proper winter tyres with studs): just put your foot down.

If I'll ever move back that'd be my ideal winter car.

Hm... somehow this went OT

My winter tyres are red and take an oyster card, im just tight.
I'll ask my friend what he has, swears by them as they give good cold grip on route to poland and don't fall apart on our winter roads in between trips
