Post by: sammyboy92 on 21 October 2013, 17:27
hi guys,

the cars new to me so im just fixing a few things and getting it to my liking so...

question 1 - ive seen some wheels i like for my car their 17" and 7"wide , but their et40 - will they fit , my cars totally standard not lowered or anything ? what et will fit a mk3 with no modifications ?

question 2- my drivers electric window wont go down , when i press the button the motor clicks but no movement , ive got another motor but my question is how do i get the motor out and swap it , ive undone all the bolts for the arms but cant get anything out ?

any help would be appreciated

I would not go with 17' alloys. I am due to get some lightweight 16' soon. My current 17's affects my speedo and handling. 16 inch are the way forward with Mk3s if honest

in what way does it affect the speedo ? do 16's fill the arches without lowering?
is the handling that bad, i dont really drive the car that fast , thats what the motorbikes for ;)
also what sort of offset should i be looking for as some guides say 35-38 but others say up to 42 and i cant really be bothered messing round with spacers !

and on the window i only undid 5 little bolts , one going into the motor and 4 holding the two arms in place ?

Those wheels will be fine, you will need 205/40/17 tyres to keep the gearing / speedo all ok.

oh i was under the impression the standard wheels were et35 - it currently has the 15inch 5x100 longbeach ones.
and ah brilliant so if i keep the tyres on a nice low profile they should be ok :)

Nope, to keep the speedo correct you would need 205/35/17

16" rims are the way to go - look inside your fuel cap, the 16" option should be listed - 215/40/16 gives a nice (if slightly firm) ride.

205/40/17 is close enough plus a lot cheaper and easier to find.

worth a read http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=216424.0

if your original tyre size is 205/50/15 and you put 205/40/17's on then the total diameter will increase by 10mm which will in effect put your speedo out

You can use this tool to see what i mean :- http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator

If you put bigger wheels on without lowering the car will be higher, handling will therefore be worse and it will of course look like an off roader

3% out by my reckoning - that's no close enough, that's the difference between not getting nicked for speeding and 3 points on your licence :)

Why mess around cutting corners and saving a couple of quid just for cosmetics?

205/50-15         4.0in  11.5in    23.1in         72.5in        874        0.0%
205/40-17         3.2in  11.7in    23.5in         73.7in        860        1.7%

I had them on my mk3 and against GPS it was not far out.

215/40/16 gives approx 886 revs per mile

205/40/17 gives approx 860 revs per mile

Your speedo will read just over 3% slow.

So @ 70mph by my maths is + or - 2.1 mph so if you were caught @ 73mph I doubt they are going to throw the book at you, I believe guidelines are a 10% margin of error depending on the limit.

Of course, that depends on your speedo being accurate :)

You may or may not have a 10% margin for error (depending on which force stops you) but why take the chance?

Your gearing would also be 3% out but hey, what do VW know about stuff like this?

2.5% is about maximum you can go to and according to etyres the diff is about 1.7%.

I don't see the issue with running 205/40x17

No issue, just won't perform and handle as good as 16

My car is on 17s tho not thru choice and the rides not that bad although it is lowered slightly. The speedo seems fine but that's going by those digital speed readers on the roads and what the car says matches it.

If he wants 17s, let him buy 17s.

16s generally handle better because most people fit cheap-ass heavy wheels...and the 16s are not as heavy as the 17s...so the handling improves.
Fit a set of strong, light 17s and 205/40/17s and it will handle just fine and the speedo be perfectly usable...but the longer gearing will not do the already comically long gearing any favours...so the car will probably be slower at accelerating...but much is down to weight and width.

Fit a set of light & strong 16s and with the right tyres, it'll accelerate better and handle better...but fit some stupidly wide heavy-ass 16s and you bugger things up too.

Having tried 15s, 16s and 17s on my Golfs, I think the best balance is light & strong (BBS RX) 7x16s...but the offset, width and weight come into play too.
It's not black and white.
