Hello, I have been reading allot on the forum and got lots of information, so this is my first post.
I have a mk5 1.6fsi at the moment and looking to change it for either an edition 30 or a mk6 GTI.
My question is, is there a noticeable difference between the cars when then are both standard and when they are both remapped?
I know that the edition 30 has a larger turbo so the standard bhp is 230, then with a stage 1 remap it would be about 300 bhp.
The mk6 GTI as standard is 210 bhp and with a stage 1 remap would be roughly 275 bhp.
From that information and what I have read on the forum I believe that the edition 30 will be quicker standard and remapped compared to the mk6 GTI.
So, I am wondering is the difference that noticeable, or is it just 10ths of a second.
Cheers

I had a mapped ED30, which was 300BHP and felt amazingly quick with the DSG box.
I now have a MK6 GTI standard, and although it is punchy, its nowhere near the launch the ED30 had, but its 90BHP under so I expected that.
That said the MK6 is a nicer shape, more refined and modern inside, and still has potential.

Expect typical peak power increases of around 40 BHP + on both engines.
20 BHP peak difference on stock mapping is probably a small difference on the road.
What about the ED35? It has the TFSI engine but the looks and interior of the MK6.
The Fueling system on the TSI engine is better out of the box but there are several pump upgrades available for the TFSI engine. There is a problem with HPFP Cam Follower wear on TFSI engine which in the worst cases results in a replacement Camshaft but this is rare and inexpensive to manage (£20-25 to replace the Follower) and straight forward enough do DIY.

I went from a mapped edition 30 to a MK6 gti.
Obviously the standard Mk6 is a lot slower, but overall its a nicer place to be, enhanced further if you get the 18" Monzas on.
-
also depends on how old a car you want to own, last Ed30s were made in early 2008 with Pirellis for the rest of 2008, mk6 GTIs started in 2009
tsi and K04 completely different in power delivery
-
Thanks for all the response.
I agree, the mk6 is a nicer placer to be.
Unfortunately an edition 35 is out of my budget.
There is a difference in power, but as you said it is going to be a marginal difference on the road( coming from a 1.6 they are both going to feel quick).
The age thing is a factor. For a little bit more money I can get a newer car with less miles, and a nicer interior.
I am convinced to get a mk6 now, although an ed 30 would have been nice, a mk6 is a better overall package.

Just posted my mk6 for sale in the classifieds. I have been on the forum for a while but had to re-register as my hard disk failed & had to be replaced!

Recently got a MK6 GTI, and like yourself was previously driving the wifes mk5 1.6 fsi. The power may be less than the ED30, but it looks and feels nicer on the inside and out imo. And back to the power thing, there is still plenty to put a smile on your face. Did a 300 mile round trip last week and it was great, 800 mile round trip upto scotland planned for next week, cant wait.

make sure you visit the roads up past loch lomond if you get a chance

I was in some boat also was looking for Ed30's for ages and just did not like the Mk6 at all, but then over the months months it just grew on me. I remember seeing a pic of the Mk6 from the side in 3 door CW with the monzas...
That won me over + as mentioned the interior is more modern and felt like a big upgrade from my 51 plate Pug.
Nearly 2 years later and still a happy customer a few hick ups but now sorted and some blufin added to the mix next year and I'll be even happier

I don't know how the ED30 feels to drive, but the power delivery in the Mk6 GTI surprised me a bit. It feels dead below 2000 revs, flat up to 4000 revs and very quick after 4500 revs - not at all what I was expecting from a turbo. More like a Honda VTEC.
Or does it have a problem?!
-
Well I had a Mk6 Gti for 3 years and now have an Ed30 so can speak with experience. Took me a while to find what I wanted though, 2008 model, 1 owner, manual, low mileage and immaculate.
In standard form the Ed30 is just as quick as the Mk6, but it delivers its power in a different way and at the top end. Its lungs are bigger is the best way to describe it. On paper they are very similar.
Coming from a Mk6 and its very linear power delivery to an Ed30 was a shock but I always intended to remap the Ed30 which is what I did with a £500 Stage 1 Revo, a Forge DV and upgraded discs and pads.
A remapped Ed30 is in a different league to a Mk6 Gti. Mine is approx 305bhp and 300Lbs torque. It now delivers its power in a much smoother linear way and is so docile in traffic or just pootling. Engine seems happier.
Put your foot down and I don't think anything ( bar supercar or exotica ) could live with it. Mid range it is brutal.Motorway or Dual Carriageway blasts are hilarious. Upside is economy has improved as well.
The Mk6 is a fantastic car though, much smoother and more comfortable. I wanted to drive something with a bit more balls and something that was more fun and that is what a remapped Ed30 gives you.
Remember the Ed30 engine is detuned in standard form ( same engine as current R, ED35 and Audi S3 ). Larger injectors, larger T4 turbo etc are just there waiting for a simple tune up to unleash its potential. When you do, its the perfect car.
Good luck and let me know if you want to know more.

Thanks for the replies.

I bet. It would be interesting if you get the mk6 mapped to see how it compares to the mapped Ed30.

I really like the 18" moza shadows, they really set it off. The black inserts make them look allot bigger. I had 18" monza reps on my mk5, always wanted the real deal. I saw a few cars with the 17", they didn't do it for me.

I agree, as I am going to be keeping it for a while I think it is better to get something younger.

feels allot quicker going from the 1.6, especially then getting back into the 1.6.

Thanks for the detailed reply. That really confirms what I thought the differences would be. Great hearing from someone who has owned both. Although the power after a remap sounds immense, the interior, gadgets and age of the mk6 have one me over.

I have gone for a mk6 as I think it is better overall, even if it isn't as tunable.
After looking for quite sometime, I found one which ticked all my boxes and picked it up yesterday. It is plenty quick enough and feels more refined than my mk5 1.6.
It is a three door, tornado red with 18" monza shadows (really set it off), jacara cloth interior and satnav.
I have got a list of a few things that I would like to do already:
- Gloss black rear valance, sills, front lip
- Lowered - H&R super sport springs (off my mk5 if they will fit) or coilovers (AP, Weitec, KW, H&R)
- Discreet subwoofer out of my mk5
- Bi-xenon headlights - probably replicas off ebay
In the future
- Re-map
- Exhaust - like how it sounds at the moment though
I will get some pictures up soon

good stuff, everyone goes on and on about Ed30 performance but about 90% of the Stage 2/2+ cars out there don't have the chassis mods to cope with the added grunt imho
some decent handling mods and you'll have a cracking car

^^^^^^ So true Mr Wigit!
Even my REVO'd mk6 used to struggle for traction at stage 1 and I actually found the detuned 95RON program REVO supplied was more user friendly.
I've since driven a Bluefin mk6 and it was a lot more tractable despite being a bit down on power compared to the REVO. Much less wheelspin issues, no axle tramp etc. so probably covered ground faster.
Once you go past stage 1 then the balance tips the wrong way and you end up losing what you bought the GTI for in the first place unless you plan serious chassis mods.
I dread to think what a Stage 2+ ED30 or 35 is like to drive on standard brakes and suspension at full chat!

I don't totally agree.
My GTi has very strong midrange

That soounds about right.
REVO are renowned for having a more aggressive engine map. REVO are usually more about outright BHP numbers.

MK6 GTI feels a bit more linear on stock mapping, preferred both TFSI and TSI with a remap though.
Not sure I fully believe all these 300 Bhp stage 1 ED30 figures, sure the engine flows really well with the K04 but you see the results on Dyno's and they are around 275 Bhp mark. Of course there are many factors to consider...
-
My ED30 dyno'd at 301BHP on a R Tech Remap. Loved that car, and being DSG it just flew!
Do love my MK6 GTI too though!
Want an R next!
