Title: iPhone connection
Post by: dengiehammer on 20 October 2013, 14:15
I still haven't received my car I ordered it mid May. I have just got an iPhone 5, through work. Can anyone tell me, the connector in the GTD is this for the older models of iPhone?

BW 44 and before is old connector and BW 45 and after is new. Can probably get one off your dealer when you collect if need be.

Cars are currently coming with the old-style iPhone connector, but can be used with the Apple lightning adapter and this works fine.  Apparently VW are launching a new-style lead with the lightning connector, but it will depend on when your car is manufactured whether you get this or not.

So for the non technophobe who's got an iphone 5 the dealer said I'd need a lightning adapater @ around £25 from Apple.  Question do I need an Apple connector or what difference will I experience fitting a lesser make from Amazon?

The lightning adapter is actually a pain, because you have to take your phone out of its case before you can attach it.  A proper lightning connector would be small enough to pass directly through the case and into the charging socket.

Depends on the case.  You don't have to take the case off with mine, but you do with my missus' case.  Agreed, its a pain though.  Also the connection is very temperamental.

I dont have my gti yet but i was under the assumption the bluetooth would be the easiet and best option for playing my music from the iphone? I.e. It would display album art and navigation can be achieved from the touchscreen or steering wheel?

I believe the media lead provides better playback and its only the red lead that gives you album art.

The steering wheel control is very limited - just next/prev track and volume. Probably the most disappointing thing about the GTI. I was expecting to be able to navigate the iPhone fully from the steering wheel as I have in all cars I've had over the last 5+ years

That is dissapointing. I was looking forward to full multimedia control from the wheel with album art from bluetooth.

Is it possible to get a longer iPhone cable from VW?

The reason I ask is that I've got a Brodit mount which attaches to the central air vent just to the left of the steering wheel.  It puts the phone in a great position but unfortunately the supplied cable isn't long enough.  In the meantime I've been using BT for audio streaming - the sound quality seems pretty good but unfortunately the limited control isn't

Not sure about VW but you can get extension cables on eBay;

I have a brodit in the same mount position in my current car.  How is the mount in the golf? Does the cable end up covering the media screen?  I have an active charger for my iphone which I plug into the 12v socket.  I'll probably be looking to do the same going forward though if I could utilise the red cable in someway that would be neater....

I've been really chuffed with the mount.  I went for the passive holder as I wasn't sure if it'd be compatible with the VW cable and you can rotate it horizontally which is useful for the TomTom app.

At the moment I'm using a USB cable trailing from the 12v socket.  This hangs down the right hand side of the touch screen so it doesn't get in the way.

Tonight I had another listen when connected to the MDI socket and, whilst BT audio is good, I'm sure the quality when connected via the VW cable is even better.

I'm going to get the extension cable kindly linked to by Monsta above.. seems like that will work well

If you've updated to iOS7, third party adapters/cables almost certainly won't work with an iPhone 5. Apple want you to use their own lightning adapters for obvious reasons - it contains a sophisticated processor. A Chinese knock-off is likely to cause more harm than good.

I have the same brodit clip for my iPhone 5. I ordered this extender, plus needs the apple lightning adaptor and works just fine.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004E7OOCK/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And no, it doesn't cover the screen, it runs fairly neatly along the right hand side, vertically down the nook between the glossy media dash and the softer plastic that surrounds it. Only OCD annoyance is the cubby has to stay open

The red lead??? Is this the colour you get from VW or is this another one I have to purchase?

Even using the MDI interface, or over B/Tooth?

I only got my GTI yesterday so haven't had a good play yet, but I'd be annoyed if I didn't get some control using the MDI.
