Title: Petrol RON
Post by: GolfTi on 19 October 2013, 21:25
Guys and girls.

The higher RON petrol has given me around 3mpg extra over the last tank full.
Just over 400 to one fill up, not bad considering the tank is 5l smaller.
Is it worth the extra price?? Maybe, maybe not.

36.8 long term average. Approaching 6k.

I don't drive a Golf, but I do have a Scirocco TSI, I would say it is. I definitely get improved mpg and a slightly better pickup/response with 98 RON. Still think that Shell V-Power (or new name Nitro) is the best, but also runs very well on BP Ultimate.

This topic was discussed at length (and with a lot of passion) back in summer:

Enjoy

Based on 36.8mpg and an increase of 3mpg (33.8mpg assumed on RON95), as long as the V-power etc is no more than 13p a litre more than regular RON95 (assumed to be £1.31 per litre) then it pays to use it. With more mpg probably comes a bit more power and you're using less of it in everyday situations. I'd carry on using the V-power/BP ultimate etc. 400 miles to a tank on a GTI is good going. Right now i'd only be getting about 440 miles to a tank on my GTD.

I tried 3 with tesco 99 and rest with normal and saw no difference in performance or fuel consumption. I never have with any gti's i have had. Bit because of variable timing on mk7 i thought i would try it. So normal stuff for me again

My dealer suggested RON98 every 4th fill but I'm not sure if there is any scientific logic to this??

Think it is suppose to keep your engine cleaner with the additives they add. But whether or not it does is a different matter.

I have always used Shell Optimax - V-Power & Nitro in all my Petrol cars and really feel its worth the difference in price. Better mpg and smoother running.
Only been using Shell V-Power & Nitro Diesel since 2011 but same results.
If I manage to get 40mpg + out of my GTi it would be nice

Good luck with that. I tried a longish journey in Eco, and drove like Miss Daisy - and the best I got was 35 average. I've only done 1,600 miles however, but even so 40+ mpg isn't likely IMO.

1,600 miles is nothing... you would probably start seeing 40+ mpg figures after about 20k miles.
My Polo Bluemotion was the same, once it passed 20k mark the figures just got better and better.

I managed 40 mpg today on my daily journey to work with 1200 miles on the clock.  It's a mixture of motorway (70 mph) and city driving.

PS I'm using 95RON

I have also seen others on the internet which are getting 40 mpg +
To be fair I bought the car to have more fun and the added creature comforts etc.
It will be really hard to compare anything mpg wise to my Polo which I am getting 75mpg consistently

Mpg seems to improve with time and miles, I am also now convinced that 98/99 RON makes a difference, maybe only 2-3 mpg. Difficult to prove of course.

But hey, it's a GTI and who really cares.
Just loving the way this car drives.

I can easily achieve 40mpg+ out of mine on a sensible run. Once you start having a fun it drops to mid to low 30's. Running standard shell fuel with 1600 miles on the clock.

To be honest I don't really care though, i didn't buy a GTI for fuel economy. The fuel consumption isn't ridiculous so its fine in my opinion.
