Title: MK3 estate Front spring plate help - FIXED
Post by: burstlikeabubble on 19 October 2013, 16:49
I've fitted lowering springs to my 1996 MK3 1,9 non turbo diesel golf estate and have noticed that the front spring plates are a little too small for the new front springs - the ones that sit directly on top of the spring. The spring doesn't look like it will go past it but i want it right you know :)

After looking online I've read that there were size differences between early and later MK3 golf front spring plates. Can anyone tell me what part number is for the larger size front spring plate and is the main dealer the best best?

Thanks!

Current spring plate is about 90mm in diameter and looks like it needs to be about 105-110mm.

Also sitting at slight angle as you can see due to the spring pushing it up on one side!

This bit?

Thanks for that. Are they big enough as the ruler in the photo makes them look about the sam as mine (90mm)? Maybe the photo isn't the best gauge?

Says here 92mm?

what diameter is the hole on the top spring on your new spring ?.There are 2 sizes and i think they are 65mm and 85mm or thereabouts.

I know that the outer diameter of the existing spring plate is about 90mm which is edge to edge the widest part you see in the photo that the spring sits against at the top so i would say the hole inside the top of the new spring is 85mm i.e. slightly smaller than the spring plate diameter?

That looks like a different design?

This might be it but seems expensive and no part numbers listed?

They are the right ones but you can get them much cheaper. Contact B&B components (tierod69 on eBay), they've  sorted me out both types in the past for around a tenner a pair.

Tierod69 B&b components - so these ones maybe?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK2-1-3-1-6-1-8-GTI-16V-FRONT-SHOCK-TOP-SPRING-PLATE-191412341-A42-/200824911175?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ec218f547

Are they MK2 ones then? Also the little notch bit on it i can see is that okay?

you will either need to get front springs for a later mk3. or change the spring plate/bearing/top mount and nuts to the earlier type. (mk2 and early mk3)

So the larger spring plate won't be enough on its own then? I would need to replace everything from spring plate upwards so to speak?

No they weren't the right part and don't fit the top mounts very well at all :(

Diameter is about right though.

Here's how they compare:

Anyone have any ideas what is the correct part i need?

I am in exactly the same position and not happy,
there's a mention of different spring plates on FK's info but theres no mention of what you need to buy,

I think I(we) need these

It keeps the later "floating" spring plate design, only problem is it will lower the front by (I guess) 10mm or so,
but looking at the stock early mk3 to late mk3 plates it looks like the early ones will raise it by 20mm or so.
I'm waiting till 9am then phoning Germany to complain,
I'll keep you posted

Just phoned FK in Germany, spoke to a nice knowledgable English guy called David,
I explained the situation and he is arranging me a pair of these to be sent to me

like I said they may lower the front a bit but should be easy to make a spacer between spring plate and bearing

Yeah I looked at those very FK lowering spring plates too on the CarpartsTuning site as it had the same style as my old ones and looked wider too.

I sent them a message enquiring as to whether they would fit mine but all i got was:

"sorry but these use the original spring plate we do not have them for this kit.

As for the other item I have no info as to if they fit the spring or not."

I also googled the FK part number FKFT17 and ended up with images of the spring plates that i already had..

e.g. (http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/232363/volkswagen/eibach-multi~pro~r2-coilovers/fkft17.html)

...so i left it :( but hey the images in that link above could be wrong.

Would be very interested in what turns up at your door when you get them though :)

I think I found the right part!

It was part 1H0412341. Were about £20 inc VAT each from main dealer (not exactly cheap!)

It is taller than the original but not by much. Fits top of spring and top mount bearing perfect and is same style.

Here's how they compare to original spring plates and how they look fitted to:

FK FKZZVW10 sports dampers
FK FKVW075 40mm lowering springs
(www.carparts-tuning.co.uk/‎)

In hindsight i would've tried to find a lowering spring set that fits the later smaller MK3 Golf spring plates (??) or a cheap set of coilovers but hey this is where i'm at.

Also the FKFT17 lowering spring (www.carparts-tuning.co.uk/‎) plates were the same size as my original spring plates so are the smaller ones!

Maybe FKFT15s are the larger ones but i couldn't be nothered to buy any more only to be dissapointed and from what the description says about them on the website i doubt they're the ones either :(
