Help required please.
My GTI is an 07 plate registered in March 2007, currently with 60k miles on the clock.
Just today the DSG gearbox has started to play up. All seems okay and as expected in Manual mode, however...
In both D and S mode...the car pulls away okay...1st into 2nd...2nd into 3rd...then it won't go into 4th at the expected time/revs. Revving it hard and then easing off the accelerator tends to move it up a gear...and then the same for 4th to 5th...and 5th to 6th.
Have been unable to see what happens if I were to redline it in 4th or 5th as to whether it would change up properly before the engine blows up.
So, is this a sign of a duff Mechatronics Unit...? Any idea as to repair cost...? If I had a Warranty Direct policy...would they cover the full cost...?
I believe that the faulty Units are a VW known batch...anyone know which years these appeared...?
Any help and/or information much appreciated.
Thank you,
Billy

Before you get paranoid, have you got access to VCDS? Resetting the DSG may put things back to normal.
It doesn't sound like the normal DSG faults that tend to come up, which is jerky transitions through the lower gears resulting in "kangaroo hop".
DSG issues happen throughout the MKV and even MKVI golfs, but had been more prevalent on the 2004-2007 models.

Thanks Hurdy,
Of course I'm paranoid...have you seen the cost of replacement...seemingly it's about £2k...!!!
No, I don't have access to VCDS...but my local dealer will be able to reset things...if they know what they are doing. Will pop into them in the morning.
Correct...I don't have any clunking or jerkiness or kangarooing.
Hopefully it's something fairly easy to fix.
Thanks again,
Billy

I know next to nothing about DSG, but a quick question for you: Have you had the DSG fluid changed according to the Volkswagen schedule?
-
Mike,
Yes I have. Once at 27k miles...and again at 51k miles. This is actually way ahead of the scheduled every 40k miles.
Thank you,
Billy

Good stuff. Then I simply wish you luck and a small repair bill! Post on here once you've got it sorted, always handy to know what these things are caused by and how they're fixed.

Progress report.
Car went in to local dealer to have latest software checked and system re-set...£90. Problem still prevalent...now awaiting feedback from VW Technical.
VW Technical want the car back to the dealer to check...ABS sensors...wheel bearings...and pick up sensors (I think).
They just haven't went for a new Mechatronics Unit...yet...!!!
-
Problem solved.
Rusty bearing with half missing pick up ring sending duff speed information to Mechatronics Unit hence gearbox not changing up when it should.
Cost £265 plus £90 for software reset. Could have been a lot more expensive...I suppose.
-
Well, sounds like the garage you went to knew what they were doing. Which garage was it?
-
Mike,
My local dealer is Specialist Cars in Aberdeen. They have always been good when it comes to problems.
Shame I can't say the same for Volkswagen themselves.
-
Good to hear it wasn't another 'Sling it in the bin' assessment.
Having suffered a DSG gearbox and DMF failure I did wonder how upfront the assessment on the damage was but I avoided a larger bill through a good will contribution.
-
Glad you got this sorted, at not too much expense!! Could have been a lot worse..

Can you reset the Dsg gearbox ? I have had the box serviced and seems smoother now but it sometimes jerks when pulling away and in reverse too
-
Yes you can reset the box via VCDS or dealer tool
-
I wonder why the dealer didnt reset the box when they serviced it then?
