Title: Crank position sensor-location on a 2.0 AGG engine automatic B4 passat?
Post by: Jasikasisback on 17 October 2013, 01:02
Hey guys..I realise that this is the golf forum but the engine is the same in both cars so maybe someone can help me locate the crank position sensor...

My B4 passat is not wanting to start...the starter is ok and the plugs are firing (at least out on the block they are firing)

I am unsure if the fuel is getting to the plugs or not..as I have never seen wet plugs...

But my friend said most likely it is the crank position sensor...but I for the life of me cannot find this...
I have been told it is near the oil filter...near the engine mount...near the starter....but I cannot find the damn thing as I want to take it out and clean it and give it a go...and it it doesn't work then change it...

I thought it would throw up a code on the fault reader but I have been told that it may not show up...so just change it anyways as it is prone to malfunction......

Any help with the location?

The code from the owners manual is

3A52T8PASSAT VAR CL EG2 AUT
CLK LY3D CN 85 KW AGG..

Hope someone can help me out...or even direct me to a picture/manual that shows the location...:)
Then I will change it and hope it works...if not then time to have the timing checked by my friend...

(he leaves me to figure out all the easy stuff (for him it is easy as he is a mechanic) by myself and the hard stuff he gives me a hand with...(he will expect me to have a go at checking the timing...but one thing at a time...)

On the AGG engine the crank position sensor is located ob the engine block behind the oil filter and engine mount.

Circled in red in this pic.... (http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af45/benjaminparsons/Cpslocation_zpsfdb5a2fb.jpg) (http://s992.photobucket.com/user/benjaminparsons/media/Cpslocation_zpsfdb5a2fb.jpg.html)

Thank you so very very much!I will be able to find it now on my car....(I guess I will have to remove the oil filter to get to it)
One final question:where does the other end plug into? I may just need to clean the connecting plug first and see if that makes any difference.....might not have to take it off then...:)

Yes, support the engine and remove the front mount, oil filter should be ok though.

Just wondering if you could give advice as to what bolts to remove first as I see two of them go into the starter..Just wondering if a two ton jack and axle stands will be enough to work on this..(where is the best place to put the jack?)

Just sort of need a good guide to removing things in the right order...As I see it it isn't the actual mount but the metal bracket that is holding the mount that is in the way??

Looks to me that it can swing up once you get all the bolts off and then you dont have to remove the one starter bolt? (just a thought..)

Why oh why did they design it this way I  will never know......

Yeh its a silly design, you will need to remove the starter (3 bolts)  to then remove the mount.

I just stuck the jack under the sump to support the engine, its not a VW jacking point but it worked for me

Got it off and put the new one on....still wont start...guess this leads into asking for a very good guide to check the timing of the cambelt and then (if needed) the removal of the timing belt and tensioner...(I suppose it is called the crankshaft pulley or is it the drivebelt tensioner or are they the same damn thing?)

Is there anyway to check the timing easily...?
So if anyone has a very good guide to doing this on a AGG engine or equivalent please post below the link or something....(yes I have a Haynes manual but would like something a bit more descriptive...:))

I believe these engines are found in the golfs...

I take it as you have lined the pulleys up? Have you got the distributor lined up? (Points to the coil) check the timing mark on the fly wheel by taking the green or black plug on the top of the gearbox its only plastic. There will be a mark on the flywheel.
