Title: Mk2 8v GTI gear box advice.
Post by: scottyfalmouth on 16 October 2013, 18:42
Hi all.

Hopefully a quick bit of advice. My gearbox went on my 1988 8v GTI, I managed to get my hands on a Mk3 gear box and the chap said it would fit no worries (Seemed nice chap and my initial checks said it would). Looks identical and with the round green cap on the end. Only problem is the speedo linkage on mine is cable/gear and on the new one electronic. Can this be fixed easily or is it a right ball ache/start again with a different box??

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers

will bolt up fine but you will need to change the clutch centre plate. speedo cable will fit to once you take the electric speedo drive out. but you should check code first in case it wasn't the original box to the mk3.

Check the rivets on the diff before fitting (bolt kit 171.498.088.A), would be a shame to blow it to bits on your first snatched gear change
